⥃Faith and Assurance ^{[ Genesis 1:1–2 † John 1:1–5 ]}

[1] Now faith² is the³ substance⁴ of things hoped⁵ for, the evidence⁶ of things not seen. [2] For by it the elders⁷ obtained a good report. [3] Through faith⁸ we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

⥃The Faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah ^{[ Genesis 4—9 ]}

[4] By faith⁹ Abel offered unto God a more¹⁰ excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained¹¹ witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by¹² it he being dead yet speaketh¹³. [5] By faith Enoch¹⁴ was translated¹⁵ that he should not see death; and was¹⁶ not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony¹⁷, that he¹⁸ pleased God. [6] But without¹⁹ faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that²⁰ cometh to God must²¹ believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder²² of them that diligently²³ seek him. [7] By faith Noah²⁴, being warned²⁵ of God of things²⁶ not seen as yet, moved with fear²⁷, prepared²⁸ an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned²⁹ the world, and became heir of the righteousness³⁰ which is by faith.

⥃The Faith of Abraham and Sarah ^{[ Genesis 15—22 † Romans 4:1–12 ]}

[8] By faith Abraham³¹, when he was called to go out into a place which³² he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed³³; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. [9] By faith he sojourned³⁴ in the land of promise, as [in] a strange country, dwelling³⁵ in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs³⁶ with him of the same promise: [10] For he looked³⁷ for a city which hath foundations, whose³⁸ builder and maker [is] God. [11] Through faith also Sara³⁹ herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because⁴⁰ she judged him faithful who had promised. [12] Therefore sprang there even of one, and him⁴¹ as good as dead, [so many] as the stars⁴² of the sky in multitude, and as the sand⁴³ which is by the sea shore innumerable. [13] These all died⁴⁴ in faith⁴⁵, not⁴⁶ having received the promises, but⁴⁷ having seen them afar off, and were⁴⁸ persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed⁴⁹ that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. [14] For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek⁵⁰ a country. [15] And truly, if they had been mindful⁵¹ of that [country] from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. [16] But now they desire⁵² a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is⁵³ not ashamed to be⁵⁴ called their God: for⁵⁵ he hath prepared for them a city. [17] By faith⁵⁶ Abraham, when⁵⁷ he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received⁵⁸ the promises offered⁵⁹ up his only⁶⁰ begotten [son], [18] Of⁶¹ whom it was said, That⁶² in Isaac shall thy seed be called: [19] Accounting that God⁶³ [was] able to raise [him] up, even from the⁶⁴ dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

⥃The Faith of Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph ^{[ Genesis 27—50 ]}

[20] By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.⁶⁵ [21] By faith⁶⁶ Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped⁶⁷, [leaning] upon the top of his staff. [22] By faith⁶⁸ Joseph, when he died, made mention of⁶⁹ the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

⥃The Faith of Moses ^{[ Exodus 2—15 † Acts 7:20–22 ]}

[23] By faith⁷⁰ Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw [he was] a proper child⁷¹; and they⁷² were not afraid of the king’s⁷³ commandment. [24] By faith Moses, when⁷⁴ he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; [25] Choosing⁷⁵ rather to suffer affliction with the people⁷⁶ of God, than to enjoy the pleasures⁷⁷ of sin for a season; [26] Esteeming the reproach⁷⁸ of Christ⁷⁹ greater⁸⁰ riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had⁸¹ respect unto the recompence of the reward. [27] By faith he forsook⁸² Egypt, not fearing⁸³ the wrath of the king: for he endured⁸⁴, as seeing⁸⁵ him who is invisible. [28] Through faith he kept⁸⁶ the passover, and the sprinkling⁸⁷ of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. [29] By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry [land]: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.⁸⁸

[30] By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.⁸⁹ [31] By faith the harlot⁹⁰ Rahab perished not with them that believed not⁹¹, when she had⁹² received the spies with peace. [32] And what shall⁹³ I more say? for the time⁹⁴ would fail me to tell of Gedeon⁹⁵, and [of] Barak⁹⁶, and [of] Samson⁹⁷, and [of] Jephthae⁹⁸; [of] David⁹⁹ also, and Samuel¹⁰⁰, and [of] the prophets¹⁰¹: [33] Who through¹⁰² faith subdued kingdoms, wrought¹⁰³ righteousness, obtained¹⁰⁴ promises, stopped¹⁰⁵ the mouths of lions, [34] Quenched¹⁰⁶ the violence of fire, escaped¹⁰⁷ the edge of the sword, out of¹⁰⁸ weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned¹⁰⁹ to flight the armies of the aliens. [35] Women¹¹⁰ received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured¹¹¹, not accepting¹¹² deliverance; that they¹¹³ might obtain a better resurrection: [36] And others had trial of [cruel] mockings¹¹⁴ and scourgings¹¹⁵, yea, moreover of bonds¹¹⁶ and imprisonment: [37] They were stoned¹¹⁷, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain¹¹⁸ with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins¹¹⁹ and goatskins; being destitute¹²⁰, afflicted, tormented; [38] (Of whom¹²¹ the world was not worthy:) they wandered¹²² in deserts, and [in] mountains, and [in] dens and caves of the earth. [39] And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:¹²³ [40] God having provided¹²⁴ some better¹²⁵ thing for us, that they without¹²⁶ us should not be made¹²⁷ perfect.
