⥃A Warning against Favoritism

[1] My brethren, have not the faith² of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord³] of glory, with⁴ respect of persons. [2] For if there come unto your assembly⁵ a man with a gold⁶ ring, in goodly⁷ apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile⁸ raiment; [3] And ye⁹ have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place¹⁰; and say to the¹¹ poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: [4] Are ye not then partial¹² in yourselves, and are become judges¹³ of evil thoughts? [5] Hearken¹⁴, my beloved brethren, Hath not¹⁵ God chosen the poor of this world rich¹⁶ in faith, and heirs¹⁷ of the¹⁸ kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? [6] But ye¹⁹ have despised the poor. Do²⁰ not rich men oppress you, and²¹ draw you before the judgment seats? [7] Do not they blaspheme²² that worthy²³ name by²⁴ the which ye are called? [8] If ye fulfil the royal²⁵ law according to the scripture, Thou²⁶ shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do²⁷ well: [9] But if²⁸ ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are²⁹ convinced of the law as transgressors³⁰. [10] For³¹ whosoever³² shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all. [11] For he that said, Do not commit³³ adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now³⁴ if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.³⁵ [12] So speak³⁶ ye, and so do, as the³⁷y that shall be judged by the law of liberty. [13] For he³⁸ shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and³⁹ mercy rejoiceth⁴⁰ against judgment.

⥃Faith and Works ^{[ Galatians 3:1–9 ]}

[14] What⁴¹ [doth it] profit, my brethren, though⁴² a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can⁴³ faith save him? [15] If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,⁴⁴ [16] And one⁴⁵ of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be [ye] warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what⁴⁶ [doth it] profit? [17] Even so⁴⁷ faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone⁴⁸. [18] Yea, a man may say, Thou⁴⁹ hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works⁵⁰, and I will⁵¹ shew thee my faith by my works. [19] Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest⁵² well: the⁵³ devils also believe, and tremble.⁵⁴ [20] But wilt thou know, O vain⁵⁵ man, that⁵⁶ faith without works is dead? [21] Was not Abraham⁵⁷ our father justified⁵⁸ by works, when⁵⁹ he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou⁶⁰ how faith⁶¹ wrought with his works, and by works was faith made⁶² perfect? [23] And the scripture⁶³ was fulfilled which saith, Abraham⁶⁴ believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend⁶⁵ of God. [24] Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.⁶⁶ [25] Likewise also was⁶⁷ not Rahab the harlot⁶⁸ justified⁶⁹ by works, when⁷⁰ she had received the messengers, and had sent [them] out another way? [26] For as⁷¹ the body without the spirit⁷² is dead, so⁷³ faith without works is dead also.
