⥃A Greeting from James [ Jude 1:1–2 ]
[1] James3, a servant4 of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to5 the twelve tribes which are scattered6 abroad, greeting7.
⥃Rejoicing in Trials [ Philippians 1:12–20 ]
[2] My brethren, count8 it all joy when ye fall into divers9 temptations; [3] Knowing [this], that10 the trying of your faith worketh patience11. [4] But let12 patience have [her] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and13 entire, wanting14 nothing. [5] If any15 of you lack wisdom, let16 him ask of God, that giveth to all [men] liberally, and upbraideth17 not; and it shall be given him. [6] But let18 him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he19 that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. [7] For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.20 [8] A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.21 [9] Let the brother22 of low degree rejoice23 in24 that he is exalted: [10] But the rich, in25 that he is made low: because26 as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. [11] For the sun is no sooner risen27 with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so28 also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. [12] Blessed [is] the man29 that endureth temptation: for when30 he is tried, he shall receive the crown31 of life, which32 the Lord hath promised to them33 that love him.
⥃Good and Perfect Gifts
[13] Let no man34 say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil35, neither tempteth he any man: [14] But every man is tempted, when36 he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. [15] Then when3738 lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. [16] Do39 not err, my40 beloved brethren. [17] Every good41 gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the42 Father of lights, with whom is no variableness43, neither shadow of turning. [18] Of his own44 will begat he us with45 the word of truth, that we should be a kind46 of firstfruits of his creatures.
⥃Hearing and Doing
[19] Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let47 every man be swift to hear, slow to speak48, slow to wrath49: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.50 [21] Wherefore lay51 apart all filthiness52 and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive53 with meekness the engrafted54 word, which55 is able to save your souls. [22] But be56 ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving57 your own selves. [23] For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:58 [24] For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what59 manner of man he was. [25] But whoso looketh60 into the perfect61 law of liberty62, and63 continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful64 hearer, but a doer of the work, this65 man shall be blessed in his deed66. [26] If any man among you seem67 to be religious, and bridleth68 not his tongue, but69 deceiveth his own heart, this70 man’s religion [is] vain. [27] Pure71 religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit72 the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep73 himself unspotted from the world.

-
James, the son of Alpheus, the brother of Jacob, and the near relation of our Lord, called also James the Less, probably because he was of lower stature, or younger, than the other James, the son of Zebedee, is generally allowed to be the writer of this Epistle; and the few that have doubted this have assigned very slight reasons for their dissent, and advanced very weak arguments on the other side. It is recorded in ecclesiastical history, and the book of the Acts of the Apostles confirms the fact, that he generally resided at Jerusalem, superintending the churches in that city, and in the neighbouring places, to the end of his life, which was terminated by martyrdom about ad 62. This epistle appears to have been written but a short time before his death; and it is probable that the sharp rebukes and awful warnings given in it to his countrymen excited that persecuting rage which terminated his life. It is styled Catholic, or General, because it was not addressed to any particular church, but to the Jewish nation throughout their dispersions. Though its genuineness was doubted for a considerable time, yet its insertion in the ancient Syriac version, which was executed at the close of the first, or the beginning of the second century, and the citation of, or allusion to it, by Clement of Rome, Hermas, and Ignatious, and its being quoted by Origen, Jerome, Athanasius, and most of the subsequent ecclesiastical writers, as well as its internal evidence, are amply sufficient to prove the point. ↩
