⥃As the Deer Pants for the Water

To the chief Musician, Maschil2, for the sons3 of Korah.

[1] As the hart panteth4 after the water brooks, so panteth5 my soul after thee, O God. [2] My soul thirsteth6 for God, for the living7 God: when8 shall I come and appear before God? [3] My tears9 have been my meat day and night, while10 they continually say unto me, Where [is] thy God? [4] When11 I remember these [things], I pour12 out my soul in me: for I13 had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice14 of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday. [5] Why art thou cast down15, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted in me? hope16 thou in God: for I shall yet praise him17 [for] the help18 of his countenance. [6] O my God19, my soul is cast down within me: therefore20 will I remember thee from the21 land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites22, from the hill Mizar23. [7] Deep calleth24 unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts25: all thy26 waves and thy billows are gone over me. [8] [Yet] the Lord will command27 his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night28 his song [shall be] with me, [and] my prayer unto the God29 of my life. [9] I will say unto God30 my rock, Why hast31 thou forgotten me? why go32 I mourning because33 of the oppression of the enemy? [10] [As] with34 a sword35 in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while36 they say daily unto me, Where [is] thy God? [11] Why art thou cast down37, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health38 of my countenance, and my God.

  25. A water-spout is a large tube formed of clouds by means of the electric fluid, the base being uppermost, and the point let down perpendicularly form the clouds. It has a particular kind of circular motion at the point; and, being hollow within, attracts vast quantities of water, which it frequently pours down in torrents upon the earth. These spouts are frequent on the coast of Syria; and no doubt the Psalmist had often seen them, and the ravages which they made. ↩
