⥃God’s Promise to Isaac [ Genesis 12:1–9 ]
[1] And there was a famine in the land, beside the first2 famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac3 went unto Abimelech4 king of the Philistines unto Gerar.5 [2] And the Lord appeared6 unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell7 in the land which I shall tell thee of: [3] Sojourn8 in this land, and I will be9 with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee10, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath11 which I sware unto Abraham thy father; [4] And I will make thy seed to multiply12 as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall13 all the nations of the earth be blessed; [5] Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.14
⥃Isaac Deceives Abimelech
[6] And Isaac dwelt in Gerar15: [7] And the men of the place asked [him] of his wife; and he said, She [is] my sister16: for he feared to say, [She is] my wife; lest, [said he], the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she [was] fair17 to look upon. [8] And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window18, and saw, and, behold, Isaac [was] sporting19 with Rebekah his wife. [9] And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she [is] thy wife: and how saidst thou, She [is] my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. [10] And Abimelech said, What [is] this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.20 [11] And Abimelech charged all [his] people, saying, He that toucheth21 this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
⥃Isaac’s Prosperity
[12] Then Isaac sowed22 in that land, and received23 in the same year an hundredfold24: and the Lord blessed25 him. [13] And the man waxed great2627, and went forward28, and grew until he became very great: [14] For he had possession29 of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants30: and the Philistines envied31 him. [15] For all the wells which his father’s32 servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped33 them, and filled them with earth. [16] And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go34 from us; for thou art much mightier35 than we.
[17] [¶]And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. [18] And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days36 of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he37 called their names after the names by which his father had called them. [19] And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water38. [20] And the herdmen of Gerar did strive39 with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water [is] ours: and he called the name of the well Esek40; because they strove with him. [21] And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah41. [22] And he removed from thence, and digged42 another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth43; and he said, For now the Lord44 hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful45 in the land. [23] And he went up from thence to Beer–sheba46. [24] And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I [am] the47 God of Abraham thy father: fear48 not, for I [am] with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. [25] And he builded49 an altar there, and called50 upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.
⥃Isaac’s Covenant with Abimelech
[26] Then Abimelech51 went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol52 the chief captain of his army. [27] And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing53 ye hate me, and have sent me54 away from you? [28] And they said, We saw certainly55 that the Lord was with56 thee: and we said, Let there57 be now an oath betwixt us, [even] betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; [29] That thou wilt58 do us no hurt, as we have not59 touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou [art] now the blessed60 of the Lord. [30] And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.61 [31] And they rose up betimes62 in the morning, and sware63 one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. [32] And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have64 found water. [33] And he called it Shebah65: therefore66 the name of the city [is] Beer–sheba67 unto this day.
⥃Esau’s Wives
[34] And Esau68 was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter69 of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath70 the daughter of Elon the Hittite:71 [35] Which72 were a grief of mind73 unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

The author of the "History of the Piratical States of Barbary" observes (p. 44), that the Moors of that country are divided into tribes like the Arabians, and like them dwell in tents, formed into itinerant villages; that "these wanderers farm lands of the inhabitants of the towns, sow and cultivate them, paying their rent with the produce, such as fruits, corn, wax, etc. They are very skilful in choosing the most advantageous soils for every season, and very careful to avoid the Turkish troops, the violence of the one little suiting the simplicity of the other." It is natural to suppose, that Isaac possessed the like sagacity, when he sowed in the land of Gerar, and received that year an hundred-fold. ↩

Dr. Adam Clarke remarks, that there is a strange and observable occurrence of the same term in the original, which is literally, "And the man was GREAT, and he went, going on, and was GREAT, until that he was exceeding GREAT." How simple is this language, and yet how forcible! ↩

In those countries, a well of water was a great acquisition; and hence, this mode of injuring new settlers, or revenging themselves on their enemies, is still resorted to among the inhabitants. ↩

Dr. A. Clarke observes, that this is the first instance on record of what was termed among the Greeks, ostracism, i.e., the banishment of person from the state, of whose power, influence, or riches, the people were jealous. ↩

Houbigant contends, that instead of bimey, "in the days," we should read, avdey, "servants;" agreeably to the Samaritan, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate: "And Isaac digged again the wells of water which the servants of Abraham his father had digged." ↩

Phichol, as well as Abimelech, "father king," seems to have been a name of office or dignity among the Philistines; for it is not probable that they were the same as are mentioned in the days of Abraham (Gen 21:22, Gen 21:32). ↩
