⥃Mary Anoints Jesus [ Matthew 26:6–13 † Mark 14:3–9 † Luke 7:36–50 ]
[1] Then Jesus six2 days before the passover came to Bethany3, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. [2] There they made4 him a supper; and Martha5 served: but Lazarus6 was one of them that sat at the table with him. [3] Then took7 Mary a pound of ointment8 of spikenard9, very costly, and anointed10 the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled11 with the odour of the ointment. [4] Then saith one12 of his disciples, Judas Iscariot13, Simon’s [son], which should betray him, [5] Why was14 not this ointment sold for three hundred15 pence, and given16 to the poor? [6] This he said, not17 that he cared for the poor; but because18 he was a thief, and had the bag19, and bare what was put therein. [7] Then said Jesus, Let20 her alone: against21 the day of my burying hath she kept this. [8] For the poor22 always ye have with you; but23 me ye have not always.
⥃The Plot to Kill Lazarus
[9] Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.24
[10] But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;25 [11] Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.26
⥃The Triumphal Entry [ Zechariah 9:9–13 † Matthew 21:1–11 † Mark 11:1–11 † Luke 19:28–40 ]
[12] On the next day much27 people that were come28 to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, [13] Took branches29 of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna30: Blessed [is] the King31 of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. [14] And Jesus32, when he had found a young as33s, sat thereon; as it is written, [15] Fear34 not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting35 on an ass’s colt. [16] These things understood36 not his disciples at the first: but when37 Jesus was glorified, then38 remembered they that these things were written of him, and [that] they had done these things unto him. [17] The people39 therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare40 record. [18] For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.41 [19] The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive42 ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world43 is gone after him.
⥃Jesus Predicts His Death
[20] And there were certain Greeks44 among them that came up to worship45 at the feast: [21] The same came therefore to Philip46, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would47 see Jesus. [22] Philip cometh and telleth Andrew48: and again Andrew and49 Philip tell Jesus.
[23] And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour50 is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. [24] Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except51 a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if52 it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. [25] He that loveth53 his life shall lose it; and he that hateth54 his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. [26] If any man serve55 me, let56 him follow me; and where57 I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him58 will [my] Father honour. [27] Now is59 my soul troubled; and what60 shall I say? Father61, save me from this hour: but62 for this cause came I unto this hour. [28] Father63, glorify thy name. Then64 came there a voice from heaven, [saying], I have65 both glorified [it], and will66 glorify [it] again. [29] The people therefore, that stood by, and heard [it], said that it thundered67: others said, An angel68 spake to him. [30] Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but69 for your sakes. [31] Now is70 the judgment of this world: now71 shall the prince of this world be cast out. [32] And I, if72 I be lifted up from the earth, will73 draw all [men74] unto me. [33] This he said, signifying75 what death he should die. [34] The people answered him, We have heard out of the law76 that Christ77 abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who78 is this Son of man? [35] Then Jesus said unto them, Yet79 a little while is the light with you. Walk80 while ye have the light, lest81 darkness come upon you: for82 he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. [36] While ye have light, believe83 in the light, that ye may be the children84 of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed85, and did hide himself from them.
⥃Belief and Unbelief
[37] But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:86 [38] That87 the saying of Esaias88 the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who89 hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm90 of the Lord been revealed91? [39] Therefore they92 could not believe, because93 that Esaias said again, [40] He hath94 blinded their eyes, and hardened95 their heart; that they96 should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be97 converted, and I should heal98 them. [41] These things said Esaias, when99 he saw100 his glory, and spake101 of him.
[42] Nevertheless among102 the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not103 confess [him], lest104 they should be put out of the synagogue: [43] For they105 loved the praise of men more than the praise of God106.
[44] Jesus cried107 and said, He108 that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. [45] And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.109 [46] I am110 come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide111 in darkness. [47] And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge112 him not: for113 I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. [48] He that rejecteth114 me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word115 that I have spoken, the same shall judge116 him in the last day. [49] For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.117 [50] And I know that his118 commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Spikenard is a highly a romatic plant growing in India, whence was made a very valuable unguent or perfume, used at the ancient baths and feasts. It is identified by Sir W. Jones with the sumbul of the Persians and Arabs, and jatamansi of the Hindoos; and he considers it a species of the valerian, of the triandria monogynia class of plants. The root is from three to twelve inches long, fibrous, sending up above the earth between thirty and forty ears or spikes, from which it has its name; stem, lower part perennial, upper part herbaceous, sub-erect, simple, from six to twelve inches long; leaves entire, smooth, fourfold, the inner radical pair petioled and cordate, the rest sessile and lanceolate; pericarp, a single seed crowned with a pappus. ↩
