(KJV) Isaiah 211

<< Isaiah 20 Isaiah 22 >>

Babylon Is Fallen[ Revelation 18:1–8 ]

[1] The burden2 of the desert3 of the sea. As whirlwinds4 in the south pass through; [so] it cometh from5 the desert, from a terrible land. [2] A grievous6 vision is declared unto me; the treacherous7 dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up8, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the9 sighing thereof have I made to cease. [3] Therefore are10 my loins filled with pain: pangs have11 taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed12 down at the hearing [of it]; I was dismayed at the seeing [of it]. [4] My heart panted13, fearfulness affrighted me: the night14 of my pleasure hath he turned15 into fear unto me. [5] Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat16, drink: arise17, ye princes, [and] anoint the shield. [6] For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go18, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth. [7] And he saw19 a chariot [with] a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, [and] a chariot of camels; and he hearkened20 diligently with much heed: [8] And he cried, A lion21: My lord, I stand22 continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights23: [9] And, behold24, here cometh a chariot of men, [with] a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon25 is fall26en, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground. [10] O my threshing27, and the corn28 of my floor: that which29 I have heard of the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

The Burden against Edom[ Isaiah 34:5–17 ]

[11] The burden of Dumah30. He calleth to me out31 of Seir, Watchman, what32 of the night? Watchman, what of the night? [12] The watchman said, The morning33 cometh, and also the night: if34 ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.

The Burden against Arabia

[13] The burden upon Arabia35. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye36 travelling companies of Dedanim. [14] The inhabitants of the land of Tema37 brought38 water to him that was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled. [15] For they fled from the swords39, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war. [16] For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according40 to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar41 shall fail: [17] And the residue of the number of archers42, the mighty43 men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for44 the Lord God of Israel hath spoken [it].

  1. Isa 21:1, The prophet, bewailing the captivity of his people, sees in a vision the fall of Babylon by the Medes and Persians; Isa 21:11, Edom, scorning the prophet, is moved to repentance; Isa 21:13, The set time of Arabia’s calamity.

  2. The first ten verses of this chapter contain a prediction of the taking of Babylon by the Medes and Persians; which is here denominated "the desert of the sea," because the country around it, and especially towards the sea, was a great morass, often overflowed by the Tigris and Euphrates, and only rendered habitable by being drained by a number of canals. 30. Dumah is probably the same as Dumatha, a city of Arabia, mentioned by Stephanus, and the modern Dumah and Dumathalgandel, on the borders of Arabia and Syria, in a rocky valley. The Edomites, says Bp. Lowth, as well as Jews, were subdued by the Babylonians. They enquire of the prophet how long their subjection is to last; he intimates that the Jews should be delivered from their captivity; not so the Edomites. "The morning cometh, and also the night."
