(KJV) Isaiah 401

<< Isaiah 39 Isaiah 41 >>

Prepare the Way for the LORD[ Matthew 3:1–12 Mark 1:1–8 Luke 3:1–20 John 1:19–28 ]

[1] Comfort2 ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. [2] Speak ye comfortably3 to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare4 is accomplished, that her iniquity5 is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double6 for all her sins.

[3] The voice7 of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare8 ye the way of the Lord, make9 straight in the desert a highway for our God. [4] Every valley10 shall be exalted, and every mountain11 and hill shall be made low: and the12 crooked shall be made straight13, and the rough places plain14: [5] And the glory15 of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh16 shall see [it] together: for the mouth17 of the Lord hath spoken [it].

The Enduring Word[ 1 Peter 1:22–25 ]

[6] The voice said, Cry18. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh19 [is] grass, and all the goodliness thereof [is] as the flower of the field: [7] The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people [is] grass. [8] The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word20 of our God shall stand for ever.

Here Is Your God![ Romans 11:33–36 ]

[9] O Zion, that bringest good tidings21, get22 thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings23, lift up24 thy voice with strength; lift [it] up, be not25 afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold26 your God! [10] Behold, the Lord God27 will come with strong [hand28], and his arm29 shall rule for him: behold, his reward30 [is] with him, and his work31 before him. [11] He shall feed32 his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather33 the lambs with his arm, and carry [them] in his bosom, [and] shall gently lead34 those that are with young35.

[12] Who hath measure36d37 the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed38 the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? [13] Who hath directed39 the Spirit of the Lord, or [being] his counsellor40 hath taught him? [14] With whom took he counsel, and [who] instructed him41, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding42? [15] Behold, the nations43 [are] as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles44 as a very little thing. [16] And Lebanon [is] not sufficient to burn, nor45 the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering. [17] All nations before him [are] as nothing46; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.

[18] To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?47 [19] The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.48 [20] He that [is] so impoverished that he hath no oblation49 chooseth50 a tree [that] will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, [that] shall not51 be moved. [21] Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?52 [22] [It is] he that sitteth53 upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants54 thereof [are] as grasshoppers; that stretcheth55 out the heavens as a curtain56, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: [23] That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.57 [24] Yea, they shall not be planted58; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also59 blow upon them, and the60y shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble. [25] To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.61 [26] Lift62 up your eyes on high, and behold who hath63 created these [things], that bringeth64 out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness65 of his might, for that [he is] strong in power; not one faileth. [27] Why sayest66 thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment67 is passed over from my God?

[28] [¶]Hast thou not known68? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting69 God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends70 of the earth, fainteth71 not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching72 of his understanding. [29] He giveth power to the faint; and to [them that have] no might he increaseth strength.73 [30] Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:74 [31] But they that75 wait upon the Lord shall renew76 [their] strength; they shall mount77 up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; [and] they shall walk, and not faint78.

  34. A beautiful image, as Bp. Lowth remarks, expressive of the tender attention of the shepherd to his flock. That the greatest care in driving the cattle, in regard to the dams and their young, was necessary, appears clearly from Jacob's apology to his brother Esau, Gen 33:13; which is set in a still stronger light by the following remarks of Sir J. Chardin: "Their flocks feed down the places of their encampments so quick, by the great numbers that they have, that they are obliged to remove them often, which is very destructive to their flocks, on account of the young ones, who have not strength enough to follow."

  56. Or, "as a thin veil," as Bp. Lowth renders; which he illustrates by the following passage from Dr. Shaw. "It is usual in the summer season, and upon all occasions when a large company is to be received, to have the court sheltered from heat, or inclemency of the weather by a velum umbrella, or veil, as I shall call it; which, being expanded on ropes from one end of the parapet to the other, may be folded or unfolded at pleasure. The Psalmist seems to allude to some covering of this kind, in that beautiful expression of spreading out the heavens as a curtain."
