⥃The Earthly Tabernacle [ Exodus 40:1–33 † Acts 7:44–47 ]
[1] Then verily the first2 [covenant] had3 also ordinances4 of divine service, and5 a worldly sanctuary. [2] For there was a tabernacle6 made; the first7, wherein [was] the candlestick, and the table8, and the shewbread9; which is called the sanctuary10. [3] And after the second11 veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest12 of all; [4] Which had the golden13 censer, and the ark14 of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein [was15] the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s16 rod that budded, and the17 tables of the covenant; [5] And over18 it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat19; of which we cannot now speak particularly. [6] Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests20 went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service [of God]. [7] But into21 the second [went] the high priest alone once every year, not22 without blood, which he offered for himself, and [for] the errors23 of the people: [8] The Holy Ghost24 this signifying, that the way25 into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: [9] Which [was] a figure26 for the time27 then present, in which were offered both gifts28 and sacrifices, that could29 not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining30 to the conscience; [10] [Which stood] only in meats31 and drinks, and divers32 washings, and carnal33 ordinances34, imposed [on them] until35 the time of reformation.
⥃Redemption through His Blood
[11] But Christ36 being come an high priest37 of good38 things to come, by a greater39 and more perfect tabernacle, not made40 with hands, that is to say, not of this building; [12] Neither by the41 blood of goats and calves, but by his42 own blood he entered43 in once44 into the holy place, having45 obtained eternal redemption [for us]. [13] For if46 the blood of bulls and47 of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying48 of the flesh: [14] How49 much more shall the blood50 of Christ, who51 through the eternal52 Spirit offered53 himself without54 spot55 to God, purge56 your conscience from dead works57 to serve58 the living59 God? [15] And for this cause he is the mediator60 of the new61 testament, that by means62 of death, for63 the redemption of the transgressions [that were] under the first64 testament, they which65 are called might receive the promise66 of eternal67 inheritance. [16] For where a testament [is], there must also of necessity be68 the death of the testator. [17] For a testament [is] of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.69 [18] Whereupon neither the first70 [testament] was dedicated71 without blood. [19] For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood72 of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet73 wool, and hyssop74, and sprinkled75 both the book, and all the people, [20] Saying, This76 [is] the blood of the testament77 which God hath enjoined unto you. [21] Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.78 [22] And almost79 all things are by the law purged with blood; and without80 shedding of blood is no remission. [23] [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns81 of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly82 things themselves with better sacrifices than these. [24] For Christ is not entered into the holy83 places made with hands, [which are] the figures84 of the true; but85 into heaven itself, now to appear86 in the presence of God for us: [25] Nor yet that he should offer87 himself often, as88 the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; [26] For then must he often have suffered since the foundation89 of the world: but now once in90 the end of the world hath he appeared91 to put away sin by the sacrifice92 of himself. [27] And as93 it is appointed unto men once to die, but94 after this the judgment: [28] So Christ was95 once offered to bear96 the sins of many; and unto them97 that look for him shall he appear98 the second time without99 sin unto100 salvation.
