⥃Jesus Sends the Seventy-Two [ Matthew 9:35–38 ]
[1] After these2 things the Lord appointed other seventy3 also, and sent them two and4 two before his face into every city and place, whither5 he himself would come. [2] Therefore said he unto them, The harvest6 truly [is] great, but the labourers7 [are8] few: pray9 ye therefore the Lord10 of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. [3] Go your ways: behold, I send11 you forth as lambs among wolves12. [4] Carry neither13 purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and14 salute no man by the way. [5] And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace [be] to this house.15 [6] And if the son16 of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall17 turn to you again. [7] And in18 the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for19 the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go20 not from house to house. [8] And21 into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat22 such things as are set before you: [9] And heal23 the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom24 of God is come nigh unto you. [10] But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go25 your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, [11] Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding26 be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. [12] But I say unto you, that27 it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
⥃Woe to the Unrepentant [ Matthew 11:20–24 ]
[13] Woe unto28 thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for29 if the mighty works had been done in Tyre30 and Sidon, which31 have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented32, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. [14] But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.33 [15] And thou, Capernaum34, which35 art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust36 down to hell. [16] He that heareth you37 heareth me; and he that despiseth you38 despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him39 that sent me.
⥃The Joyful Return
[17] And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.40 [18] And he said unto them, I beheld Satan41 as lightning fall from heaven. [19] Behold, I give42 unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing43 shall by any means hurt you. [20] Notwithstanding in this44 rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your45 names are written in heaven.
⥃Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving [ Matthew 11:25–30 ]
[21] In that hour Jesus46 rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank47 thee, O Father, Lord48 of heaven and earth, that thou hast49 hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed50 them unto babes: even51 so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. [22] All things52 are delivered to me of my Father: and no53 man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and [he] to whom the Son will reveal [him].
[23] And he turned him unto [his] disciples, and said privately, Blessed54 [are] the eyes which see the things that ye see: [24] For I tell you, that many55 prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen [them]; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard [them].
⥃The Parable of the Good Samaritan
[25] And, behold, a certain56 lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master57, what shall I do to58 inherit eternal life? [26] He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?59 [27] And he answering said, Thou60 shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy61 neighbour as thyself. [28] And he said unto him, Thou hast62 answered right: this63 do, and thou shalt live. [29] But he, willing64 to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And65 who is my neighbour? [30] And Jesus answering said, A certain [man] went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded66 [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. [31] And by67 chance there came down a certain priest68 that way: and when he saw him, he passed69 by on the other side. [32] And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked [on him], and passed by on the other side.70 [33] But a certain Samaritan71, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had72 compassion [on him], [34] And went73 to [him], and bound74 up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn75, and took care of him. [35] And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence76, and gave [them] to the host77, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever78 thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. [36] Which now of these three, thinkest79 thou, was80 neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? [37] And he said, He that81 shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go82, and do thou likewise.
⥃Martha and Mary
[38] Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain83 village: and a certain woman named Martha received84 him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, which85 also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. [40] But Martha was cumbered86 about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost87 thou not care that my88 sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. [41] And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou89 art careful and troubled about many90 things: [42] But one91 thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen92 that good93 part, which94 shall not be taken away from her.

Luke 10:1, Christ sends out at once seventy disciples to work miracles, and to preach; Luke 10:13, pronounces a woe against certain cities; Luke 10:17, The seventy return with joy; he shews them wherein to rejoice, and thanks his Father for his grace; Luke 10:23, magnifies the happy estate of his church; Luke 10:25, teaches the lawyer how to attain eternal life, and to take every one for his neighbour that needs his mercy; Luke 10:38, reprehends Martha, and commends Mary her sister. ↩

Rather, seventy others, as Dr. Campbell renders; for the expression other seventy implies that there were seventy sent before, which was not the case. It seems to refer to the twelve apostles whom our Lord had previously chosen. Num 11:16, Num 11:24-26 ↩
