David Anointed King of All Israel[ 1 Chronicles 11:1–3 ]

[1] Then came2 all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we3 [are] thy bone and thy flesh. [2] Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out4 and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord said to thee, Thou shalt feed5 my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain6 over Israel. [3] So all7 the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made8 a league with them in Hebron before9 the Lord: and they anointed10 David king over Israel.

[4] [¶]David [was] thirty11 years old when he began to reign, [and] he reigned forty12 years. [5] In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years13 and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

David Conquers Jerusalem[ 1 Chronicles 11:4–9 ]

[6] And the king and his men went to Jerusalem14 unto the Jebusites15, the inhabitants of the land: which spake16 unto David, saying, Except17 thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot18 come in hither. [7] Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion19: the same20 [is] the city of David. [8] And David said on that day, Whosoever21 getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, [that are] hated of David’s soul, [he shall be22 chief and captain]. Wherefore23 they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. [9] So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city24 of David. And David built round about from Millo25 and inward. [10] And David went on, and grew great26, and the Lord27 God of hosts [was] with him.

[11] And Hiram28 king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons29: and they built30 David an house.

David’s Family Grows[ 1 Chronicles 14:1–7 ]

[12] And David31 perceived that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people32 Israel’s sake.

[13] [¶]And David took [him] more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.33 [14] And these [be] the names34 of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua35, and Shobab, and Nathan36, and Solomon37, [15] Ibhar also, and Elishua38, and Nepheg, and Japhia, [16] And Elishama, and Eliada39, and Eliphalet40.

Two Victories over the Philistines[ 1 Chronicles 14:8–17 ]

[17] But when41 the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard [of it], and went down to the hold42. [18] The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley43 of Rephaim. [19] And David enquired44 of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord45 said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. [20] And David came to Baal–perazim46, and David smote them there, and said, The Lord hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal–perazim. [21] And there they left their images, and David47 and his men burned them48.

[22] [¶]And the Philistines came up49 yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. [23] And when David enquired50 of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not go up; [but] fetch51 a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees52. [24] And let it be, when thou hearest the sound53 of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir54 thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. [25] And David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba55 until thou come to Gazer56.

  52. The word bechaim, rendered mulberry trees, is rendered by Aquila, απιων, pear-trees, as the LXX also render in 1Chr 14:14-15; and so the Vulgate in both places has pyrorum. The Rabbins, however, believe bacha signifies the mulberry-tree; with whom Ursinus agrees. It more probably denotes a large shrub which the Arabs still call baca, from its distilling an odoriferous gum, from bachah to distil, as tears. Of this opinion is Celsius, who quotes a passage from Abulfadi, who describes it as a balsam shrub, having longish leaves, and bearing a large fruit with an acrid taste. M. Forskal mentions a tree by the name of beca, with leaves rather ovated, smooth, entire. Its berries are poisonous to the sheep.
