⥃Jacob’s Departure
[1] And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed2 him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt3 not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. [2] Arise4, go to Padan–aram5, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban6 thy mother’s brother. [3] And God7 Almighty bless thee, and make8 thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude9 of people; [4] And give thee the blessing10 of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger11, which12 God gave unto Abraham. [5] And Isaac sent away Jacob13: and he went to Padan–aram14 unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
⥃Esau Marries Mahalath
[6] When Esau15 saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan–aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou16 shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; [7] And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan–aram;17 [8] And Esau seeing that the daughters18 of Canaan pleased not19 Isaac his father; [9] Then went Esau unto Ishmael20, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath21 the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.
⥃Jacob’s Ladder
[10] And Jacob went out from Beer–sheba, and went toward Haran.22 [11] And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took23 of the stones of that place, and put [them24 for] his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. [12] And he dreamed25, and behold a ladder26 set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. [13] And, behold, the Lord stood27 above it, and said, I [am28] the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land29 whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; [14] And thy seed30 shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad31 to the west32, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee33 and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. [15] And, behold, I [am34] with thee, and will keep35 thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring36 thee again into this land; for I37 will not leave thee, until38 I have done [that] which I have spoken to thee of.
[16] And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I39 knew [it] not. [17] And he was40 afraid, and said, How dreadful [is] this place! this [is] none other but the house41 of God, and this [is] the gate of heaven.
⥃The Stone of Bethel
[18] And Jacob rose up42 early in the morning, and took43 the stone that he had put [for] his pillows, and set it44 up [for] a pillar, and poured45 oil upon the top of it. [19] And he called the name46 of that place Beth–el47: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first. [20] And Jacob vowed48 a vow, saying, If God49 will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give50 me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, [21] So that I come51 again to my father’s house in peace; then52 shall the Lord be my God: [22] And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be God’s53 house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will54 surely give the tenth unto thee.

Whoever observes Jacob's life, after he had surreptitiously obtained his father's blessing, will perceive that he enjoyed very little worldly felicity. His brother purposed to murder him, to avoid which he was forced to flee from his father's house; his uncle Laban deceived him, as he had deceived his father, and treated him with great rigour; after a servitude of 21 years, he was obliged to leave him in a clandestine manner, not without danger of being brought back, or murdered by his enraged brother; no sooner were these fears over, than he experienced the baseness of his son Reuben, in defiling his bed; he had next to bewail the treachery and cruelty of Simeon and Levi toward the Shechemites; then he had to feel the loss of his beloved wife; he was next imposed upon by his own sons, and had to lament the supposed untimely end of Joseph; and to complete all, he was forced by famine to go into Egypt, and there died, in a strange land. So just, wonderful, and instructive are all the ways of Providence! ↩
