Saying 7[ 1 Timothy 6:17–19 James 5:1–6 ]

[1] When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:1 [2] And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [be] a man given to appetite.2 [3] Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful meat.3

Saying 8

[4] Labour4 not to be rich: cease5 from thine own wisdom. [5] Wilt thou6 set thine eyes upon7 that which8 is not? for [riches9] certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Saying 9

[6] Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an10 evil eye, neither desire11 thou his dainty meats: [7] For as12 he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat13 and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee. [8] The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Saying 10

[9] Speak14 not in the15 ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Saying 11

[10] Remove16 not the old landmark17; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless18: [11] For their redeemer [is] mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.19

Saying 12

[12] Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.20

Saying 13

[13] Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.21 [14] Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.22

Saying 14

[15] My son23, if24 thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine25. [16] Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy26 lips speak right things.

Saying 15

[17] Let not27 thine heart envy sinners: but [be thou28] in the fear of the Lord all the day long. [18] For surely29 there is an end30; and thine31 expectation shall not be cut off.

Saying 16

[19] Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide32 thine heart in the way33. [20] Be not34 among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh35: [21] For the drunkard36 and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness37 shall clothe [a man] with rags.

Saying 17

[22] Hearken38 unto thy father that begat thee, and despise39 not thy mother when she is old. [23] Buy40 the truth, and sell41 [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. [24] The father42 of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have43 joy of him. [25] Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she44 that bare thee shall rejoice.

Saying 18

[26] My son45, give46 me thine heart, and let47 thine eyes observe my ways. [27] For a whore [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.48 [28] She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey49, and increaseth50 the transgressors among men.

Saying 19

[29] Who hath woe51? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness52 of eyes? [30] They that tarry53 long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed54 wine. [31] Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.55 [32] At56 the last it biteth57 like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder58. [33] Thine eyes59 shall behold strange women, and60 thine heart shall utter perverse things. [34] Yea, thou61 shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst62 of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. [35] They have stricken63 me, [shalt thou say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not64: when shall I awake? I will65 seek it yet again.
