⥃A Good Name
[1] A [good] name1 [is] rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than2 silver and gold. [2] The rich3 and poor meet together: the Lord4 [is] the maker of them all. [3] A prudent5 [man] foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple6 pass on, and are punished. [4] By7 humility [and] the fear of the Lord [are] riches, and honour, and life. [5] Thorns8 [and] snares [are] in the9 way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. [6] Train up10 a child11 in the way12 he should go: and when13 he is old, he will not depart from it. [7] The rich14 ruleth over the poor, and the borrower15 [is] servant to the lender16. [8] He that17 soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail18. [9] He that hath a bountiful eye19 shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. [10] Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.20 [11] He that21 loveth pureness of heart, [for] the grace of his lips22 the king23 [shall be] his friend. [12] The eyes24 of the25 Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words26 of the transgressor. [13] The slothful27 [man] saith, [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. [14] The mouth28 of strange women [is] a deep pit29: he that is abhorred30 of the Lord shall fall therein. [15] Foolishness31 [is] bound in the heart of a child; [but32] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. [16] He that oppresseth33 the poor to increase his [riches], [and] he that giveth34 to the rich, [shall] surely [come] to want.
⥃Saying 1
[17] Bow35 down thine ear, and hear36 the words of the wise, and apply37 thine heart unto my knowledge. [18] For [it is38] a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee39; they shall withal be fitted40 in thy lips. [19] That thy41 trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee42. [20] Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,43 [21] That I44 might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer45 the words of truth to them that send unto thee46?
⥃Saying 2
[22] Rob47 not the poor, because he [is] poor: neither oppress48 the afflicted in the gate49: [23] For the Lord50 will plead their cause, and spoil51 the soul of those that spoiled them.
⥃Saying 3
[24] Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:52 [25] Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.53
⥃Saying 4
[26] Be not thou [one] of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts.54 [27] If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?55
⥃Saying 5
[28] Remove56 not the ancient landmark57, which thy fathers have set.
⥃Saying 6
[29] Seest thou a man58 diligent in his business? he shall stand59 before kings; he shall not stand before mean [men60].
