⥃Blessed Be the LORD, My Rock
[A Psalm] of David.
[1] Blessed [be] the Lord my strength2, which teacheth3 my hands to war4, [and] my fingers to fight: [2] My goodness5, and my fortress6; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and [he] in whom I trust; who subdueth7 my people under me. [3] Lord, what [is] man8, that thou takest knowledge of him! [or] the son9 of man, that thou makest account of him! [4] Man10 is like to vanity: his days11 [are] as a shadow that passeth away. [5] Bow12 thy heavens, O Lord, and come down: touch13 the mountains, and they shall smoke. [6] Cast forth14 lightning, and scatter them: shoot out15 thine arrows, and destroy them. [7] Send16 thine hand17 from above; rid me, and deliver me18 out of great waters, from the hand19 of strange children; [8] Whose mouth20 speaketh vanity, and their right hand21 [is] a right hand of falsehood. [9] I will sing a new22 song unto thee, O God: upon23 a psaltery [and] an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee. [10] [It is he] that giveth24 salvation25 unto kings: who delivereth26 David his servant from the hurtful sword. [11] Rid me, and deliver me27 from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand [is] a right hand of falsehood: [12] That our sons [may be] as plants28 grown up in their youth; [that] our daughters [may be] as corner stones29, polished30 [after] the similitude31 of a palace: [13] [That] our garners32 [may be] full, affording all manner of store33: [that] our sheep34 may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets: [14] [That] our oxen [may be] strong to labour35; [that there be] no breaking in36, nor going out; that [there be] no complaining in our streets. [15] Happy37 [is that] people, that is in such a case: [yea], happy [is that] people, whose God [is] the Lord.

Ps 144:1, David blesses God for his mercy both to him and to man; Ps 144:5, He prays that God would powerfully deliver him from his enemies; Ps 144:9, He promises to praise God; Ps 144:11, He prays for the happy state of the kingdom. Calmet and others think that this Psalm was composed by David after the death of Absalom; and from a collation of it with Psa. 18, in which the same ideas and form of expression occur, there can be no doubt of both having proceeded from the same pen, and that David was the author. ↩
