⥃I Stretch Out My Hands to You
A Psalm of David.
[1] Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness2 answer me, [and] in thy righteousness. [2] And enter not3 into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight4 shall no man living be justified. [3] For the enemy5 hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten6 my life down to the ground; he hath made me7 to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. [4] Therefore is my spirit8 overwhelmed within me; my heart9 within me is desolate. [5] I remember10 the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands. [6] I stretch forth11 my hands unto thee: my soul12 [thirsteth] after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. [7] Hear me13 speedily, O Lord: my spirit14 faileth: hide not15 thy face from me, lest I be like16 unto them17 that go down into the pit. [8] Cause me to hear18 thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me19 to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift20 up my soul unto thee. [9] Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee21 to hide me. [10] Teach22 me to do thy will; for thou [art23] my God: thy spirit24 [is] good; lead me into the land25 of uprightness. [11] Quicken26 me, O Lord, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’27 sake bring28 my soul out of trouble. [12] And of thy mercy29 cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I [am] thy30 servant.

Ps 143:1, David prays for favour in judgment; Ps 143:3, He complains of his griefs; Ps 143:5, He strengthens his faith by meditation and prayer; Ps 143:7, He prays for grace; Ps 143:9, for deliverance; Ps 143:10, for sanctification; Ps 143:12, for destruction of his enemies; The LXX, Vulgate, Ethiopic, and Arabic state that this Psalm was composed by David on the rebellion of his son Absalom; and there are several passages in it which agree remarkably well with that period; for then he had most reason to fear lest God should deal with him according to his sins; which he deprecates with such a deep sense of his unworthiness, that it has hence been numbered among the penitential Psalms, of which it is the last. In it he prays to God for pardon, Ps 143:1; acknowledges the impossibility of being saved but by grace, Ps 143:2; deplores the lamentable effects of sin, Ps 143:3-4; comforts himself with a retrospect of Godôòùs mercies of old, Ps 143:5; and prays, in a variety of expressions, for remission of sin, sanctification, and redemption, Ps 143:6-12. ↩
