⥃Sennacherib Invades Judah ^{[ 2 Kings 18:13–16 † Psalms 46:1–11 ]}

[1] After these things², and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria³ came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them⁴ for himself. [2] And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight⁵ against Jerusalem, [3] He took counsel⁶ with his princes and his mighty men to stop⁷ the waters of the fountains which [were] without the city: and they did help him. [4] So there was gathered much people together, who stopped⁸ all the fountains, and the brook⁹ that ran through the midst of¹⁰ the land, saying, Why should the kings¹¹ of Assyria come, and find¹² much water? [5] Also he strengthened¹³ himself, and built up all the wall that was broken¹⁴, and raised [it] up to the towers, and another wall¹⁵ without, and repaired Millo¹⁶ [in] the city of David, and made darts¹⁷ and shields in abundance. [6] And he set captains¹⁸ of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street¹⁹ of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them²⁰, saying, [7] Be strong²¹ and courageous, be not afraid²² nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that [is] with him: for [there²³ be] more with us than with him: [8] With him [is] an arm²⁴ of flesh; but with us²⁵ [is] the Lord our God to help us, and to fight²⁶ our battles. And the people rested²⁷ themselves upon the words²⁸ of Hezekiah king of Judah.

⥃Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem ^{[ 2 Kings 18:17–37 † Isaiah 36:1–22 ]}

[9] After this did Sennacherib²⁹ king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he [himself laid siege] against Lachish³⁰, and all his power³¹ with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that [were] at Jerusalem, saying,³² [10] Thus saith³³ Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide in the siege³⁴ in Jerusalem? [11] Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over³⁵ yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God³⁶ shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria? [12] Hath not³⁷ the same Hezekiah taken away³⁸ his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship³⁹ before one altar⁴⁰, and burn incense upon it? [13] Know ye not what I and my⁴¹ fathers have done unto all the people of [other] lands? were the gods⁴² of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand? [14] Who [was there] among⁴³ all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God⁴⁴ should be able to deliver you out of mine hand? [15] Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive⁴⁵ you, nor persuade⁴⁶ you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less⁴⁷ shall your God deliver you out of mine hand? [16] And his servants spake yet⁴⁸ [more] against⁴⁹ the Lord God, and against his servant Hezekiah. [17] He wrote⁵⁰ also letters to rail⁵¹ on the Lord God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods⁵² of the nations of [other] lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand. [18] Then they cried⁵³ with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem that [were] on the wall, to affright⁵⁴ them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city. [19] And they spake⁵⁵ against the God⁵⁶ of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, [which were] the work⁵⁷ of the hands of man.

⥃Jerusalem Delivered from the Assyrians ^{[ 2 Kings 19:35–37 † Isaiah 37:36–38 ]}

[20] And for this [cause] Hezekiah⁵⁸ the king, and the prophet⁵⁹ Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed⁶⁰ and cried to heaven.

[21] [¶]And the Lord⁶¹ sent an angel⁶², which cut off all⁶³ the mighty men of valour, and the leaders⁶⁴ and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame⁶⁵ of face to his own land. And when he was come⁶⁶ into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him⁶⁷ there with the sword. [22] Thus the Lord⁶⁸ saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [other], and guided⁶⁹ them on every side. [23] And many brought gifts⁷⁰ unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents⁷¹ to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified⁷² in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

⥃Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery ^{[ 2 Kings 20:1–11 † Isaiah 38:1–8 ]}

[24] In those days Hezekiah⁷³ was sick to the death, and prayed unto the Lord: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign⁷⁴. [25] But Hezekiah rendered⁷⁵ not again according to the benefit [done] unto him; for his heart⁷⁶ was lifted up: therefore⁷⁷ there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.⁷⁸ [26] Notwithstanding Hezekiah⁷⁹ humbled himself for the pride⁸⁰ of his heart, [both] he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so⁸¹ that the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days⁸² of Hezekiah.⁸³

[27] [¶]And Hezekiah had exceeding much⁸⁴ riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries⁸⁵ for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels⁸⁶;⁸⁷ [28] Storehouses⁸⁸ also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls⁸⁹ for all manner of beasts, and cotes⁹⁰ for flocks. [29] Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions⁹¹ of flocks and herds in abundance: for God⁹² had given him substance very much. [30] This same Hezekiah⁹³ also stopped⁹⁴ the upper watercourse of Gihon⁹⁵, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah⁹⁶ prospered in all his works.

[31] [¶]Howbeit in [the business⁹⁷ of] the ambassadors⁹⁸ of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder⁹⁹ that was [done] in the land, God left him¹⁰⁰, to try him¹⁰¹, that he might¹⁰² know all [that was] in his heart.¹⁰³

⥃Hezekiah’s Death

[32] [¶]Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness¹⁰⁴, behold, they [are] written in the vision¹⁰⁵ of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, [and] in the book¹⁰⁶ of the kings of Judah and Israel.¹⁰⁷ [33] And Hezekiah slept¹⁰⁸ with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest¹⁰⁹ of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him¹¹⁰ honour at his death. And Manasseh¹¹¹ his son reigned in his stead.
