⥃The Army of Locusts [ Amos 7:1–9 ]

[1] Blow2 ye the trumpet3 in Zion, and sound4 an alarm in my5 holy mountain: let6 all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the7 day of the Lord cometh, for [it is] nigh at hand; [2] A day of darkness8 and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as9 the morning spread upon the mountains: a great10 people and a strong; there11 hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, [even] to the years of many generations12. [3] A fire13 devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land14 [is] as the garden of Eden before them, and behind15 them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. [4] The appearance of them [is] as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.16 [5] Like the noise17 of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a18 flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong19 people set in battle array. [6] Before their face the people shall20 be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness21. [7] They shall run22 like mighty men; they shall climb23 the wall like men of war; and they shall march24 every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: [8] Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and [when] they fall upon the sword25, they shall not be wounded. [9] They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter26 in at the windows like a thief. [10] The earth27 shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun28 and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: [11] And the Lord shall utter29 his voice before his army30: for his camp [is] very great: for [he is31] strong that executeth his word: for the day32 of the Lord [is] great and very terrible; and who33 can abide it?

⥃Return with All Your Heart

[12] Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn34 ye [even] to me with all your heart, and with fasting35, and with weeping, and with mourning: [13] And rend36 your heart, and not your garments37, and turn unto the Lord your God: for38 he [is] gracious and merciful, slow39 to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth40 him of the evil. [14] Who41 knoweth [if] he will return and repent, and leave42 a blessing behind him; [even43] a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?

[15] [¶]Blow44 the trumpet in Zion, sanctify45 a fast, call a solemn assembly: [16] Gather the people, sanctify46 the congregation, assemble47 the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let48 the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. [17] Let the priests49, the ministers of the Lord, weep between50 the porch and the altar, and let51 them say, Spare52 thy people, O Lord, and give53 not thine heritage to reproach, that54 the heathen should rule over them55: wherefore56 should they say among the people, Where [is] their God?

⥃Restoration Promised

[18] Then will the Lord be57 jealous for his land, and pity58 his people. [19] Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send59 you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye60 shall be satisfied therewith: and I61 will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: [20] But I will remove62 far off from you the northern63 [army], and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east64 sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost65 sea, and his stink66 shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because67 he hath done68 great things.

[21] [¶]Fear69 not, O land; be glad70 and rejoice: for71 the Lord will do great things. [22] Be not afraid72, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures73 of the wilderness do spring, for the tree74 beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield75 their strength. [23] Be glad then, ye children76 of Zion, and rejoice77 in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former78 rain moderately79, and he will80 cause to come down for you the rain81, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first [month]. [24] And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.82 [25] And I will restore to you the years that83 the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. [26] And ye shall84 eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise85 the name of the Lord your God, that86 hath dealt wondrously with you: and my87 people shall never be ashamed. [27] And ye shall know that I [am88] in the midst of Israel, and [that] I89 [am] the Lord your God, and none else: and my90 people shall never be ashamed.

⥃I Will Pour Out My Spirit [ Acts 2:14–36 ]

[28] And it shall come to pass afterward, [that] I91 will pour out my spirit upon92 all flesh; and your sons and your daughters93 shall prophesy, your old men shall dream94 dreams, your young men shall see visions: [29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.95 [30] And I will96 shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars97 of smoke. [31] The sun98 shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great99 and the terrible day of the Lord come. [32] And it shall come to pass, [that100] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for101 in mount Zion and in102 Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

  8. "The quantity of these insects," says a French author,"is incredible to all who have not themselves witnessed their astonishing numbers; the whole earth is covered with them for the space of several leagues. The noise they make in browsing on the trees and herbage may be heard at a great distance, and resembles that of an army in secret. Wherever their myriads spread, the verdure of the country disappears; trees and plants, stripped of their leaves and reduced to their naked boughs and stems, cause the dreary image of winter to succeed in an instant to the rich scenery of spring. When these clouds of locusts take their flight, to surmount any obstacles or to traverse more rapidly a desert soil, the heavens may literally be said to be obscured by them."
