⥃Punishment Brings No Repentance
[1] Hear this word, ye kine2 of Bashan, that [are] in the mountain3 of Samaria, which oppress4 the poor, which crush5 the needy, which say to their masters, Bring6, and let us drink. [2] The Lord God hath sworn7 by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will8 take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.9 [3] And ye shall go10 out at the breaches, every [cow at that which is] before her; and ye shall cast [them] into the palace11, saith the Lord.
[4] [¶]Come12 to Beth–el, and transgress; at Gilgal13 multiply transgression; and bring14 your sacrifices every morning, [and] your15 tithes after three years16: [5] And offer a sacrifice17 of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim18 [and] publish the free offerings: for19 this liketh you20, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord God.
[6] And I also have given you cleanness21 of teeth in all your cities, and want22 of bread in all your places: yet23 have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. [7] And also I have24 withholden the rain from you, when25 [there were] yet three months to the harvest: and I26 caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the27 piece whereupon it rained not withered. [8] So two28 [or] three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but29 they were not satisfied: yet30 have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. [9] I have smitten you with31 blasting and mildew: when32 your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm33 devoured [them]: yet34 have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. [10] I have sent among you the pestilence35 after the manner36 of Egypt: your young37 men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses38; and I have made the stink39 of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet40 have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. [11] I have overthrown [some] of you, as God41 overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a42 firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet43 have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. [12] Therefore thus44 will I do unto thee, O Israel: [and] because I will do this unto thee, prepare45 to meet thy God, O Israel. [13] For, lo, he that46 formeth the mountains, and createth47 the wind48, and declareth49 unto man what [is] his thought, that maketh50 the morning darkness, and treadeth51 upon the high places of the earth, The Lord52, The God of hosts, [is] his name.

By the "kine of Bashan," some understand the proud, luxurious matrons of Israel; but it is probable the prophet speaks catachrestically, and means the wealthy, effeminate, and profligate rulers and nobles of Samaria. Deut 32:14-15; Ps 22:12; Jer 50:11, Jer 50:27; Ezek 39:18 ↩
