Waters from under the Temple

[1] Afterward he brought me again unto the door2 of the house; and, behold, waters issued3 out from under the threshold4 of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house [stood toward] the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south [side] of the altar. [2] Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward5, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. [3] And when the man6 that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters [were] to the ankles7. [4] Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters [were] to the knees8. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters [were] to the loins. [5] Afterward he measured a thousand; [and it was] a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in9, a river that could not be passed over.

[6] [¶]And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou10 seen [this]? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. [7] Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank11 of the river [were] very many12 trees on the one side and on the other. [8] Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down13 into the desert14, and go into the sea15: [which being] brought forth into the sea, the waters16 shall be healed. [9] And it shall come to pass, [that] every thing17 that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers18 shall come, shall live19: and there shall be a very great20 multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they21 shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. [10] And it shall come to pass, [that] the fishers22 shall stand upon it from En–gedi23 even unto En–eglaim; they shall be a [place] to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish24 of the great sea25, exceeding26 many. [11] But the miry places27 thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be2829 given30 to salt. [12] And by the river31 upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow32 all trees for meat33, whose34 leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new35 fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine36.

The Borders of the Land

[13] Thus saith the Lord God; This [shall37 be] the border, whereby ye shall inherit the land according to the twelve tribes of Israel: Joseph38 [shall have two] portions. [14] And ye shall inherit it, one as well as another: [concerning] the which I lifted up mine hand39 to give it unto your fathers: and this land shall fall40 unto you for inheritance. [15] And this41 [shall be] the border of the land toward the north side, from the great sea, the way of Hethlon42, as men go to Zedad43; [16] Hamath44, Berothah45, Sibraim, which [is] between the border of Damascus46 and the border of Hamath; Hazar–hatticon47, which [is] by the coast of Hauran48. [17] And the border from49 the sea shall be Hazar–enan50, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And [this is] the north side. [18] And the east side ye shall measure from51 Hauran, and from Damascus, and from Gilead52, and from the land of Israel [by] Jordan53, from the border unto the east sea. And [this is] the east side. [19] And the south side southward, from Tamar54 [even] to the waters of strife55 [in] Kadesh, the river56 to the great sea. And [this is] the south side southward57. [20] The west side also [shall be] the great sea from the border, till a man come over against Hamath. This [is] the west side. [21] So shall ye divide this land unto you according to the tribes of Israel.

[22] [¶]And it shall come to pass, [that] ye shall divide58 it by lot for an inheritance unto you, and to the strangers59 that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you: and they shall be unto you as born in the country among the children of Israel; they shall have60 inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. [23] And it shall come to pass, [that] in what tribe the stranger sojourneth, there shall ye give [him] his inheritance, saith the Lord God.

  3. Solomon's temple and the second temple were doubtless well supplied with water, probably conveyed there by means of pipes; but these waters flowed from the temple, not as a common sewer, but as a fertilizing river. A fountain producing abundance of water was not in the temple, and could not be there on the top of such a hill; and consequently these waters, as well as those spoken of by Joel and Zechariah, must be understood figuratively and typically. These waters doubtless were an emblem of the "gospel preached with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven;" and their gradual rise beautifully represents it progress, from small beginnings to an immensely large increase; and the latter part of the representation may relate to the times when it shall fill the earth, and produce the most extensive and important effects on the state of making in every nation. 49. The Holy Land, as here described, extended from about 31 degrees to 35 degrees n lat. and from 34 degrees to 37 degrees e long.; being bounded on the north by a line drawn from the Mediterranean to Hamath; on the east by Damascus, Hauran, Gilead, and the land of Israel east of Jordan, unto the south of the Dead sea; on the south by Tamar and Kadesh, unto the river of Rhinocorura; and on the west by the Mediterranean sea, from the same point northward "till a man came over against Hamath;" and its length from north to south would be about 280 miles, and its breadth about 150 miles. The ten tribes, as well as Judah and Benjamin, were to be admitted to a full share in this inheritance, which seems to imply, that the future restoration to the promised land is predicted; while the admission of strangers who sojourned in the land to a share in the inheritance, as if native Israelites, plainly intimates the calling of the Gentiles into the church, and their joint inheritance of its privileges, and of the heavenly felicity.
