The Bridegroom

[1] I am come2 into my garden, my sister3, [my] spouse: I have gathered4 my myrrh with my spice; I have eat5en my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends6; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved7.

The Bride

[2] I sleep8, but my heart waketh: [it is] the voice9 of my beloved that knocketh10, [saying], Open11 to me, my sister, my love, my dove12, my undefiled: for my head13 is filled with dew, [and] my locks with the drops of the night. [3] I have put14 off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed15 my feet; how shall I defile them? [4] My beloved put16 in his hand by the hole [of the door], and my bowels17 were moved for him18. [5] I rose19 up to open to my beloved; and my hands20 dropped [with] myrrh, and my fingers [with] sweet smelling21 myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. [6] I opened to my beloved; but my22 beloved had withdrawn himself, [and] was gone: my soul23 failed when he spake: I sought24 him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. [7] The watchmen25 that went about the city found me, they smote26 me, they wounded me; the keepers27 of the walls took28 away my veil from me. [8] I charge29 you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye30 find my beloved, that ye31 tell him, that I [am32] sick of love.

The Friends

[9] What [is33] thy beloved more than [another] beloved, O thou34 fairest among women? what [is] thy beloved more than [another] beloved, that thou dost so charge us?

The Bride

[10] My beloved35 [is] white and ruddy, the chiefest36 among ten thousand. [11] His head37 [is as] the most fine gold, his locks38 [are] bushy39, [and] black as a raven. [12] His eyes40 [are] as [the eyes] of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, [and] fitly set41. [13] His cheeks42 [are] as a43 bed of spices, [as] sweet flowers44: his lips45 [like] lilies, dropping46 sweet smelling myrrh. [14] His hands47 [are as] gold rings set with the beryl: his belly48 [is as] bright ivory overlaid [with] sapphires. [15] His legs49 [are as] pillars of marble, set upon sockets50 of fine gold: his countenance51 [is] as Lebanon52, excellent as the cedars. [16] His mouth53 [is] most54 sweet: yea, he [is] altogether lovely. This [is] my beloved55, and this [is] my friend56, O daughters of Jerusalem.
