⥃The Psalm of the Cross [ Matthew 27:32–56 † Mark 15:21–41 † Luke 23:26–43 † John 19:16–30 ]
To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.
[1] My God2, my God, why hast3 thou forsaken me? [why art thou so] far4 from helping5 me, [and from] the words6 of my roaring? [2] O my God, I cry7 in the daytime, but8 thou hearest not; and in the night9 season, and am not silent10. [3] But11 thou [art] holy, [O thou] that12 inhabitest the praises of Israel. [4] Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.13 [5] They cried14 unto thee, and were15 delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. [6] But I [am16] a worm, and no man; a reproach17 of men, and despised of the people. [7] All they that see me laugh18 me to scorn: they shoot out19 the lip, they shake20 the head, [saying], [8] He trusted21 on the Lord [that] he would deliver him: let him22 deliver him, seeing23 he delighted in him. [9] But thou [art] he that took24 me out of the womb: thou didst25 make me hope26 [when I was] upon my mother’s breasts. [10] I was cast27 upon thee from the womb: thou28 [art] my God from29 my mother’s belly. [11] Be not30 far from me; for trouble [is] near; for [there is] none to help31. [12] Many32 bulls have compassed me: strong33 [bulls] of Bashan have beset me round. [13] They gaped34 upon me [with] their mouths, [as] a35 ravening and a roaring lion. [14] I am36 poured out like water, and all37 my bones are out of joint38: my heart39 is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. [15] My strength40 is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue41 cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the42 dust of death. [16] For dogs43 have compassed44 me: the assembly45 of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced46 my hands and my feet. [17] I may47 tell all my bones: they look48 [and] stare upon me. [18] They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.49 [19] But50 be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my51 strength, haste thee to help me. [20] Deliver my soul52 from the sword; my darling53 from the power of the dog54. [21] Save me from55 the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns56 of the unicorns. [22] I will57 declare thy name unto my brethren58: in the59 midst of the congregation will I praise thee. [23] Ye that60 fear the Lord, praise him; all ye61 the seed of Jacob, glorify62 him; and fear him, all ye the63 seed of Israel. [24] For64 he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither65 hath he hid his face from him; but66 when he cried unto him, he heard. [25] My praise67 [shall be] of thee in the great congregation: I will68 pay my vows before them that fear him. [26] The meek69 shall eat and be satisfied: they70 shall praise the Lord that seek him: your71 heart shall live for ever. [27] All the ends72 of the world shall remember and turn73 unto the Lord: and all74 the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. [28] For the kingdom [is] the Lord’s: and he [is] the governor among the nations.75 [29] All [they that be76] fat upon earth shall77 eat and worship: all they that78 go down to the dust shall bow79 before him: and none80 can keep alive his own soul. [30] A seed81 shall serve him; it shall82 be accounted to the Lord for a generation. [31] They83 shall come, and shall declare his righteousness84 unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done [this].

The textual reading is kaari, "as a lion my hands and feet;" but several manuscripts, read karoo, and others karoo in the margin, which affords the reading adopted by our translators. So the LXX ωρυξαν χειρας μου και ποδας, so also the Vulgate, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic; and as all the Evangelists so quote the passage, and apply it to the crucifixion of Christ, there seems scarcely the shadow of a doubt that this is the genuine reading; especially when it is considered, that the other contains no sense at all. The whole difference lies between ε, wav and ι, yood, which might easily be mistaken for each other. Zech 12:10; Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; John 19:23, John 19:37, John 20:25, John 20:27 ↩
