A Prophecy against Babylon

[1] The word that the Lord spake against Babylon2 [and] against the land3 of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah4 the prophet.5 [2] Declare6 ye among the nations, and publish, and set up7 a standard; publish, [and] conceal not: say, Babylon8 is taken, Bel9 is confounded, Merodach10 is broken in pieces; her idols11 are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. [3] For out of the12 north there cometh up a nation against her, which13 shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both14 man and beast.

Hope for Israel and Judah

[4] [¶]In those15 days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the children of Israel16 shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going17 and weeping: they shall go, and seek the18 Lord their God. [5] They shall ask19 the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, [saying], Come20, and let us join ourselves to the Lord in a21 perpetual covenant [that] shall22 not be forgotten. [6] My people23 hath been lost sheep: their shepherds24 have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away [on] the25 mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten26 their restingplace. [7] All that found them have devoured27 them: and their adversaries said, We offend28 not, because they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation29 of justice, even the Lord, the hope30 of their fathers. [8] Remove out of the midst31 of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats32 before the flocks.

[9] For, lo, I will raise33 and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly34 of great nations from the north country: and they shall35 set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows [shall be] as of a mighty expert man36; none37 shall return in vain. [10] And Chaldea38 shall be a spoil: all that39 spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the Lord.

Babylon’s Fall Is Certain

[11] Because ye were40 glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers41 of mine heritage, because ye are42 grown fat43 as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls44; [12] Your mother45 shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost46 of the nations [shall be] a wilderness47, a dry land, and a desert. [13] Because48 of the wrath of the Lord it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every49 one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. [14] Put yourselves in array50 against Babylon round about: all ye that bend51 the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she52 hath sinned against the Lord. [15] Shout53 against her round about: she hath54 given her hand: her foundations55 are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it56 [is] the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance upon her; as she57 hath done, do unto her. [16] Cut off the sower58 from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle59 in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one60 to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

Redemption for God’s People

[17] [¶]Israel [is] a scattered61 sheep; the lions62 have driven [him] away: first63 the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this64 Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. [18] Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I65 have punished the king of Assyria. [19] And I will bring66 Israel again to his habitation, and he shall67 feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul68 shall be satisfied upon mount69 Ephraim and Gilead70. [20] In those71 days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the iniquity72 of Israel shall be sought for, and [there73 shall be] none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon74 them whom I reserve.

The Destruction of Babylon

[21] Go up75 against the land of Merathaim76, [even] against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod77: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the Lord, and do78 according to all that I have commanded thee. [22] A sound of battle [is] in the land, and of great destruction.79 [23] How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!80 [24] I have laid a snare81 for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast82 not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because83 thou hast striven against the Lord. [25] The Lord hath opened84 his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this85 [is] the work of the Lord God of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. [26] Come against86 her from the utmost87 border, open88 her storehouses: cast her up89 as heaps, and destroy90 her utterly: let nothing of her be left. [27] Slay all her bullocks91; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day92 is come, the time of their visitation. [28] The voice93 of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare94 in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of his95 temple. [29] Call together the archers96 against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense97 her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath98 been proud against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel. [30] Therefore99 shall her young100 men fall in the streets, and all her101 men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the Lord. [31] Behold, I [am102] against thee, [O thou103] most proud104, saith the Lord God of hosts: for105 thy day is come, the time [that] I will visit thee. [32] And the most proud106 shall stumble and fall, and none107 shall raise him up: and I will kindle108 a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.

[33] Thus saith the Lord of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah [were] oppressed together: and all109 that took them captives held them fast; they refused110 to let them go. [34] Their Redeemer111 [is] strong; the Lord of hosts [is] his name: he shall thoroughly plead112 their cause, that he113 may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

[35] [¶]A sword114 [is] upon the Chaldeans, saith the Lord, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes115, and upon her wise [men116]. [36] A sword [is] upon the liars117; and they shall dote118: a sword [is] upon her mighty119 men; and they shall be dismayed. [37] A sword [is] upon their horses120, and upon their chariots, and upon all the121 mingled people that [are] in the midst of her; and they shall become as women122: a sword [is] upon her treasures123; and they shall be robbed. [38] A drought124 [is] upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it [is] the land125 of graven images, and they are mad126 upon [their] idols. [39] Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell [there], and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.127 [40] As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour [cities] thereof, saith the Lord; [so] shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.128 [41] Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.129 [42] They shall hold130 the bow and the lance: they [are] cruel131, and will not shew mercy: their voice132 shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride133 upon horses, [every one] put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. [43] The king134 of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, [and] pangs135 as of a woman in travail. [44] Behold, he shall come up like a lion136 from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who [is] a137 chosen [man], [that] I may appoint over her? for who138 [is] like me? and who will appoint me the time139? and who [is] that140 shepherd that will stand before me? [45] Therefore hear141 ye the counsel of the Lord, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least142 of the flock shall draw them out: surely he143 shall make [their] habitation desolate with them. [46] At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations. 144

  143. We have already adverted to the completion of the prophecies respecting the final destruction of Babylon (on Isa 13:18), and shall only add a few more observations, in order to shew more clearly the full accomplishment of some of these predictions. Strabo says that in his time (about the Christian era) a great part of it was a desert. Jerome says that in his time (cir. ad 340) it was quite in ruins, the walls merely serving for an inclosure for wild beasts, for the hunting of the kings of Parthia, and modern travellers universally concur in describing it in a state of utter desolation, and the habitation of wild beasts and noxious reptiles.
