⥃Israel’s Great Misery [ Matthew 10:34–39 † Luke 12:49–53 ]
[1] Woe2 is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits3, as4 the grapegleanings of the vintage: [there is] no cluster to eat: my soul desired5 the firstripe fruit. [2] The good6 [man] is perished7 out of the earth: and [there is] none upright among men: they all8 lie in wait for blood; they hunt9 every man his brother with a net.
[3] [¶]That they may do10 evil with both hands earnestly, the prince11 asketh, and the judge [asketh] for a reward; and the great12 [man], he uttereth his mischievous desire13: so they wrap14 it up. [4] The best of them [is] as a brier: the most upright [is sharper] than a thorn hedge: the day15 of thy16 watchmen [and] thy visitation cometh; now17 shall be their perplexity.18
[5] [¶]Trust ye not in19 a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep20 the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. [6] For the son21 dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s22 enemies [are] the men of his own house.
⥃Israel’s Confession and Comfort
[7] Therefore I will look23 unto the Lord; I will wait24 for the God of my salvation: my God25 will hear me.
[8] [¶]Rejoice26 not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall27, I shall arise; when I sit28 in darkness, the Lord29 [shall be] a light unto me. [9] I will bear30 the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him, until31 he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will32 bring me forth to the light, [and] I shall behold his righteousness. [10] Then33 [she that34 is] mine enemy shall see [it], and shame35 shall cover her which said unto me, Where36 is the Lord thy God? mine37 eyes shall behold her: now38 shall she be trodden down39 as the mire of the streets. [11] [In] the day40 that thy walls are to be built, [in] that day shall41 the decree be far removed. [12] [In] that day [also42] he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and [from43] the fortified cities, and from the fortress even to the river, and from sea to sea, and [from] mountain to mountain. [13] Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for44 the fruit of their doings.45
⥃God’s Compassion on Israel
[14] Feed46 thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which47 dwell solitarily [in] the wood, in the midst48 of Carmel: let them feed [in] Bas49han and Gilead, as in the days of old. [15] According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous [things].50
[16] [¶]The nations51 shall see and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay52 [their] hand upon [their] mouth, their ears shall be deaf. [17] They shall lick53 the dust like a serpent, they shall move54 out of their holes like worms55 of the earth: they shall be56 afraid of the Lord our God, and shall fear because of thee. [18] Who [is] a God57 like unto thee, that58 pardoneth iniquity, and passeth59 by the transgression of the remnant60 of his heritage? he retaineth61 not his anger for ever, because he delighteth62 [in] mercy. [19] He will turn63 again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue64 our iniquities; and thou wilt cast65 all their sins into the depths of the sea. [20] Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, [and] the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.
