⥃The LORD’s Love for Israel [ Genesis 25:19–28 † Romans 9:6–29 ]
[1] The burden2 of the word of the Lord to Israel by3 Malachi. [2] I have4 loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein5 hast thou loved us? [Was] not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the Lord: yet I6 loved Jacob, [3] And I hated7 Esau, and laid8 his mountains and his heritage waste for the9 dragons of the wilderness. [4] Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but10 we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build11, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border12 of wickedness, and, The people13 against whom the Lord hath indignation for ever. [5] And your14 eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The Lord15 will be magnified from16 the border of Israel.
⥃The Polluted Offerings
[6] A son17 honoureth [his] father, and a servant18 his master: if then19 I [be] a father, where [is] mine honour? and if20 I [be] a master, where [is] my fear? saith the Lord of hosts unto you, O priests21, that despise my name. And ye22 say, Wherein have we despised thy name? [7] Ye offer23 polluted24 bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table25 of the Lord [is] contemptible. [8] And if ye offer the blind26 for sacrifice27, [is it] not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, [is it] not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept28 thy person? saith the Lord of hosts. [9] And now, I pray you, beseech29 God30 that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means31: will he32 regard your persons? saith the Lord of hosts. [10] Who33 [is there] even34 among you that would shut the doors [for nought]? neither35 do ye kindle [fire] on mine altar for nought. I have36 no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. [11] For from37 the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name38 [shall be] great among the Gentiles; and in39 every place incense40 [shall be] offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for41 my name [shall be] great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.
[12] [¶]But ye have42 profaned it, in that ye say, The table43 of the Lord [is] polluted; and the fruit thereof, [even] his meat, [is] contemptible. [13] Ye said also, Behold44, what a weariness [is it]! and ye have snuffed at it45, saith the Lord of hosts; and ye brought [that which was] torn46, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept47 this of your hand? saith the Lord. [14] But cursed48 [be] the deceiver, which hath in his flock49 a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for50 I [am] a great King, saith the Lord of hosts, and my name51 [is] dreadful among the heathen.

The prophet shews in Mal 1:2-5 how much Jacob and the Israelites were favoured by Jehovah, more than Esau and the Edomites. Through every period of the history of Jacob's posterity, they could not deny that God had remarkably appeared on their behalf; but he had rendered the heritage of Esau's descendants, by wars and various other means, barren and waste forever. As the preceding verse was a prediction of the abolition of the Levitical priesthood, so this is a prophecy of the conversion of the Gentiles, and the spiritual priesthood of the Gospel times. As none but priests of Aaron's race might burn incense before Jehovah, a total change of the external administration of the sacred ordinances is evidently predicted.
