The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

[1] The heavens2 declare the glory of God; and the firmament3 sheweth his handywork. [2] Day unto4 day uttereth speech, and night unto5 night sheweth knowledge. [3] [There6 is] no speech nor language, [where7] their voice is not heard. [4] Their8 line9 is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them10 hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, [5] Which [is] as a bridegroom11 coming out of his chamber, [and] rejoiceth12 as a strong man to run a race. [6] His going13 forth [is] from the end of the heaven, and his circuit14 unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. [7] The law15 of the Lord [is] perfect16, converting17 the soul: the testimony18 of the Lord [is] sure19, making20 wise the simple. [8] The statutes21 of the Lord [are] right22, rejoicing23 the heart: the commandment of the Lord [is] pure24, enlightening25 the eyes. [9] The fear26 of the Lord [is] clean, enduring27 for ever: the judgments28 of the Lord [are] true29 [and] righteous altogether. [10] More to be desired [are they] than gold30, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter31 also than honey and the honeycomb32. [11] Moreover33 by them is thy servant warned: [and] in keeping34 of them [there is] great reward. [12] Who can35 understand [his] errors? cleanse36 thou me from secret37 [faults]. [13] Keep38 back thy servant also from presumptuous39 [sins]; let40 them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright41, and I shall42 be innocent from the great43 transgression. [14] Let44 the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength45, and my redeemer46.

  1. Ps 19:1, The creatures shew God’s glory; Ps 19:7, The excellency of the divine law; Ps 19:12, David prays for grace. It is uncertain when this highly finished and beautiful ode was composed; though some think it was written by David in the wilderness when persecuted by Saul.

  3. Rakeea, from raka, to stretch out, the expanse, not only containing the celestial bodies, but also the air, light, rain, dews, etc., all of which display the infinite power and wisdom of their Almighty Creator. Ps 150:1-2; Gen 1:6-8, Gen 1:14-15; Dan 12:3

  6. Or, "They have no speech, nor words, nor is their voice heard; yet into all the earth hath gone out their sound, and to the extremity of the world their words." The Hebrew, kav, rendered, line, like the Greek φθογγος, by which the LXX (who are followed by St. Paul), render it, no doubt signifies the sound as well as the cord which emits it. The Vulgate, Jerome, and Symmachus, render it to the same purpose. Deut 4:19
