A Prayer for Deliverance[ Psalms 74:1–23 Jeremiah 52:1–11 ]

A Psalm of Asaph2.

[1] O God, the heathen3 are come into4 thine inheritance; thy holy5 temple have they defiled; they have laid6 Jerusalem on heaps. [2] The dead bodies of thy servants have they given [to be] meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.7 [3] Their8 blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and [there9 was] none to bury [them]. [4] We are become10 a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn11 and derision to them that are round about us. [5] How long12, Lord? wilt13 thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy14 burn like fire? [6] Pour15 out thy wrath upon16 the heathen that have not known17 thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called18 upon thy name. [7] For they19 have devoured Jacob, and laid20 waste his dwelling place. [8] O remember21 not against us former iniquities22: let thy23 tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are24 brought very low. [9] Help us, O God of our salvation, for the25 glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge26 away our sins, for thy27 name’s sake. [10] Wherefore28 should the heathen say, Where [is] their God? let him29 be known among the heathen in our sight [by] the30 revenging31 of the blood of thy servants [which is] shed. [11] Let the sighing32 of the prisoner come before thee; according33 to the greatness of thy power34 preserve thou those that are appointed to die35; [12] And render36 unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith37 they have reproached thee, O Lord. [13] So we thy people38 and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will39 shew forth thy praise to all generations40.

  1. Ps 79:1, The psalmist complains of the desolation of Jerusalem; Ps 79:8, He prays for deliverance; Ps 79:13, and promises thankfulness. This Psalm is supposed, with much probability, to have been written on the destruction of the city and temple of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar.

The despotism of eastern princes often proceeds to such a degree of extravagance as to fill the mind with astonishment and horror. In Morocco, no person dares to bury the body of a malefactor without an order from the emperor; and Windus, speaking of a man who was to have been sawn in two, informs us, that "his body must have remained to be eaten by the dogs, if the emperor had not pardoned him."
