Why Have You Rejected Us Forever?[ Psalms 79:1–13 Jeremiah 52:1–11 ]

Maschil of Asaph.

[1] O God2, why hast thou cast [us] off for ever? [why] doth thine anger smoke3 against the sheep4 of thy pasture? [2] Remember thy congregation, [which] thou hast purchased5 of old; the rod6 of thine7 inheritance, [which] thou hast redeemed8; this mount9 Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. [3] Lift10 up thy feet unto the perpetual11 desolations; [even] all12 [that] the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. [4] Thine13 enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set14 up their ensigns [for] signs. [5] [A man] was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.15 [6] But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.16 [7] They have cast fire into thy sanctuary17, they have defiled18 [by casting down] the dwelling19 place of thy name to the ground. [8] They said20 in their hearts, Let us destroy21 them together: they have burned up all the synagogues22 of God in the land. [9] We see23 not our signs: [there is] no more24 any prophet: neither [is there] among us any that knoweth how long. [10] O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?25 [11] Why withdrawest26 thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck [it] out27 of thy bosom. [12] For God28 [is] my King of old, working29 salvation in the midst of the earth. [13] Thou didst divide30 the sea by thy strength: thou brakest31 the heads of the dragons32 in the waters. [14] Thou brakest the heads of leviathan33 in pieces, [and] gavest him [to be] meat34 to the people inhabiting the wilderness. [15] Thou didst cleave35 the fountain and the flood36: thou driedst up mighty rivers37. [16] The day38 [is] thine, the night also [is] thine: thou hast prepared39 the light and the sun. [17] Thou hast set40 all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer41 and winter. [18] Remember42 this, [that] the enemy hath reproached, O Lord, and [that] the foolish43 people have blasphemed thy name. [19] O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove44 unto the multitude [of the wicked]: forget45 not the congregation of thy poor for ever. [20] Have46 respect unto the covenant: for the dark47 places of the earth are full of the habitations48 of cruelty. [21] O let not49 the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor50 and needy praise thy name. [22] Arise51, O God, plead thine own cause: remember52 how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. [23] Forget53 not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult54 of those that rise up against thee increaseth55 continually.
