The Death of Lazarus

[1] Now2 a certain [man] was sick3, [named] Lazarus4, of Bethany5, the town of Mary6 and her sister Martha. [2] (It was [that] Mary7 which anointed8 the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) [3] The9refore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. [4] When Jesus heard [that], he said, This10 sickness is not unto death, but for11 the glory of God, that12 the Son of God might be glorified thereby. [5] Now Jesus loved13 Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. [6] When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode14 two days still in the same place where he was. [7] Then after that saith he to [his] disciples, Let15 us go into Judea again. [8] [His] disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews16 of late sought to stone thee; and goest17 thou thither again? [9] Jesus answered, Are18 there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not19, because he seeth the light of this world. [10] But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.20 [11] These things said he: and after that he saith21 unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth22; but I go, that I may awake23 him out of sleep. [12] Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. [13] Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. [14] Then said Jesus unto them plainly24, Lazarus is dead. [15] And I am glad25 for26 your sakes that I was not there, to27 the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. [16] Then said Thomas28, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let29 us also go, that we may die with him.

Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary

[17] Then when Jesus came, he found that he had [lain] in the grave four30 days already. [18] Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs31 off: [19] And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort32 them concerning their brother. [20] Then Martha, as soon33 as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat [still] in the house. [21] Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if34 thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. [22] But I know, that35 even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give [it] thee36. [23] Jesus saith unto her, Thy37 brother shall rise again. [24] Martha saith unto him, I know38 that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. [25] Jesus said unto her, I am39 the resurrection, and the life40: he that41 believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: [26] And whosoever42 liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest43 thou this? [27] She saith unto him, Yea44, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which45 should come into the world. [28] And when she had so said, she went her way, and called46 Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master47 is come48, and calleth for thee. [29] As soon as she heard [that], she arose quickly, and came unto him.49 [30] Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.50 [31] The Jews51 then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth52 unto the grave to weep there. [32] Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell53 down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if54 thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. [33] When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews55 also weeping which came with her, he groaned56 in the spirit, and was troubled57, [34] And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.58 [35] Jesus wept.59 [36] Then said the Jews, Behold60 how he loved him! [37] And some of them said, Could61 not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Jesus Raises Lazarus[ Acts 9:36–43 ]

[38] Jesus therefore again groaning62 in himself cometh to the grave. It was63 a cave, and a stone lay upon it. [39] Jesus said, Take64 ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord65, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been [dead] four days. [40] Jesus saith unto her, Said66 I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see67 the glory of God? [41] Then they took away the stone [from the place] where the dead was laid. And Jesus68 lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father69, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. [42] And I knew70 that thou hearest me always: but71 because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they72 may believe that thou73 hast sent me. [43] And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus74, come forth. [44] And he that75 was dead came forth, bound76 hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose77 him, and let him go.

The Plot to Kill Jesus[ Matthew 26:1–5 Mark 14:1–2 Luke 22:1–2 ]

[45] Then many of the Jews78 which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. [46] But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.79

[47] Then gathered80 the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What81 do we? for this man doeth many miracles. [48] If we let82 him thus alone, all83 [men] will believe on him: and the84 Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. [49] And one of them, [named] Caiaphas85, being the high priest that same ye86ar, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, [50] Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.87 [51] And this spake he not of himself: but being88 high priest that year, he prophesied89 that Jesus90 should die for that nation; [52] And not91 for that nation only, but that also he should gather92 together in one the children93 of God that were94 scattered abroad. [53] Then from95 that day forth they96 took counsel together for to put97 him to death. [54] Jesus therefore walked98 no more openly among the Jews; but went99 thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim100, and there continued with his disciples.

[55] And the Jews’ passover101 was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before102 the passover, to purify103 themselves. [56] Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?104 [57] Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had105 given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew [it], that they might take him.

  1. John 11:1, Christ raises Lazarus, four days buried; John 11:45, Many Jews believe; John 11:47, The high priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ; John 11:49, Caiaphas prophesies; John 11:54, Jesus hides himself; John 11:55, At the passover they enquire after him, and lay wait for him.

  2. The raising of Lazarus from the dead, being a work of Christ beyond measure great, the most stupendous of all he had hitherto performed, and beyond all others calculated to evince his Divine majesty, was therefore purposely recorded by the Evangelist John; while it was omitted by the other Evangelists, probably, as Grotius supposes, because they wrote their histories during the life of Lazarus, and they did not mention him for fear of exciting the malice of the Jews against him; as we find from John 12:10, that they sought to put him to death, that our Lord might not have such a monument of his power and goodness remaining in the land.

In reply to sceptical objections, it is sufficient to observe, that he who could raise Lazarus from the dead, could, with a much less exertion of power, have so loosened or removed the bandages of his feet and legs as to have rendered it practicable for him to come forth. Tittman well observes, that Lazarus was restored not only to life but also to health, as appears from the alacrity of his motion; and this would constitute a new miracle. John 20:5, John 20:7

Ephraim appears to be the same city which is called Ephrain, (see note on 2Chr 13:19), and Ephron, (see note on Josh 15:9), which was situated eight miles north of Jerusalem, near Beth–el, and apparently between that city and Jericho. Accordingly we find that a desert, or wilderness, extended from Jericho to Beth–el (Josh 16:1), called the wilderness of Beth–aven (Josh 18:12), in which Joshua and the Israelites slew the inhabitants of Ai.
