The Soldiers Mock Jesus[ Isaiah 50:4–11 Matthew 27:27–31 Mark 15:16–20 Luke 22:63–65 ]

[1] Then Pilate2 therefore took Jesus, and scourged3 [him]. [2] And the soldiers4 platted a crown of thorns, and put [it] on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, [3] And said, Hail5, King6 of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. [4] Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye7 may know that I find no fault in him. [5] Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And [Pilate] saith unto them, Behold8 the man! [6] When the chief priests9 therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify [him], crucify [him]. Pilate saith unto them, Take10 ye him, and crucify [him]: for I find no fault in him. [7] The Jews answered him, We have11 a law, and by our law he ought to die, because12 he made himself the Son of God.

[8] When Pilate therefore heard13 that saying, he was the more afraid; [9] And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence14 art thou? But15 Jesus gave him no answer. [10] Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest16 thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? [11] Jesus answered, Thou17 couldest have no power [at all] against me, except it were given the18e from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater19 sin. [12] And from20 thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art21 not Cesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cesar.

[13] When Pilate therefore heard22 that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat23 down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. [14] And it was the preparation24 of the passover, and about the sixth25 hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold26 your King! [15] But they cried out, Away27 with [him], away with [him], crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have28 no king but Cesar.

The Crucifixion[ Psalms 22:1–31 Matthew 27:32–44 Mark 15:21–32 Luke 23:26–43 ]

[16] Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led [him] away.29 [17] And he30 bearing his cross went31 forth into a place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha32: [18] Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.33

[19] And Pilate wrote34 a title, and put [it] on the cross. And the35 writing was, JESUS36 OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. [20] This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in37 Hebrew, [and] Greek38, [and] Latin. [21] Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. [22] Pilate answered, What39 I have written I have written.

[23] Then the soldiers40, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also [his] coat: now41 the coat was without seam, woven42 from the top throughout. [24] They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that43 the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted44 my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

[25] Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother45, and his46 mother’s sister, Mary the [wife] of Cleophas47, and Mary48 Magdalene. [26] When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom49 he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman50, behold thy son! [27] Then saith he to the disciple, Behold51 thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took52 her unto his53 own [home].

The Death of Jesus[ Psalms 22:1–31 Matthew 27:45–56 Mark 15:33–41 Luke 23:44–49 ]

[28] After this, Jesus54 knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the55 scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. [29] Now there was set56 a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put [it] upon hyssop57, and put [it] to his mouth. [30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is58 finished: and he59 bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced[ Zechariah 12:10–14 ]

[31] The Jews therefore, because60 it was the preparation, that the61 bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath62 day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their63 legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away. [32] Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first64, and of the other which was crucified with him. [33] But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: [34] But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came65 there out blood and water. [35] And he that66 saw [it] bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye67 might believe. [36] For these things were done, that the68 scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. [37] And again another scripture saith, They69 shall look on him whom they pierced.

The Burial of Jesus[ Isaiah 53:9–12 Matthew 27:57–61 Mark 15:42–47 Luke 23:50–56 ]

[38] And after this Joseph70 of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but71 secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave [him] leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. [39] And there came also Nicodemus72, which a73t the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound [weight]. [40] Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound74 it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. [41] Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in75 the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. [42] There laid76 they Jesus therefore because77 of the Jews’ preparation [day]; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

  10. Pilate neither did nor could say this seriously; for crucifixion was not a Jewish but a Roman mode of punishment. The cross was made of two beams, either crossing at the top, at right angles, like a T, or in the middle of their length like an X; with a piece on the centre of the transverse beam for the accusation, and another piece projecting from the middle, on which the person sat. The cross on which our Lord suffered was of the former kind, being thus represented on all old monuments, coins, and crosses. The body was usually fastened to the upright beam by nailing the feet to it, and on the transverse piece by nailing the hands; and the person was frequently permitted to hang in this situation till he perished through agony and lack of food. This horrible punishment was usually inflicted only on slaves for the worst of crimes. John 18:31; Matt 27:24

  35. The apparent discrepancy between the accounts of this title given by the Evangelists, which has been urged as an objection against their inspiration and veracity, has been most satisfactorily accounted for by Dr. Townson; who supposes that, as it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, it might have slightly varied in each language; and that, as Luke and John wrote for the Gentiles, they would prefer the Greek inscription, that Matthew, addressing the Jews, would use the Hebrew, and that Mark, writing to the Romans, would naturally give the Latin.
