⥃The Prayer of the Afflicted

A Prayer of2 the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed3, and poureth4 out his complaint before the Lord.

[1] Hear5 my prayer, O Lord, and let my6 cry come unto thee. [2] Hide7 not thy face from me in the day [when] I am in trouble; incline8 thine ear unto me: in the day9 [when] I call answer me speedily. [3] For my days10 are consumed like smoke11, and my bones12 are burned as an hearth. [4] My heart13 is smitten, and withered14 like grass; so that15 I forget to eat my bread. [5] By reason of the voice16 of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin17. [6] I am like18 a pelican19 of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. [7] I watch20, and am as a sparrow alone21 upon the house top. [8] Mine22 enemies reproach me all the day; [and] they that are mad23 against me are sworn24 against me. [9] For I have25 eaten ashes like bread, and mingled26 my drink with weeping, [10] Because27 of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast28 lifted me up, and cast me down. [11] My days29 [are] like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered30 like grass. [12] But thou31, O Lord, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance32 unto all generations. [13] Thou33 shalt arise, [and] have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set34 time, is come. [14] For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.35 [15] So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.36 [16] When37 the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall38 appear in his glory. [17] He will39 regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise40 their prayer. [18] This41 shall be written for the generation to come: and the people42 which shall be created shall praise the Lord. [19] For he43 hath looked down from the height44 of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth; [20] To hear45 the groaning of the prisoner; to loose46 those that are appointed to47 death; [21] To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;48 [22] When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.49 [23] He weakened50 my strength in the way; he shortened51 my days. [24] I said52, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years53 [are] throughout all generations. [25] Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens [are] the work of thy hands.54 [26] They shall55 perish, but thou shalt endure56: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: [27] But thou [art57] the same, and thy years58 shall have no end. [28] The children59 of thy servants shall continue, and their seed60 shall be established before thee.
