The Resurrection[ Mark 16:1–8 Luke 24:1–12 John 20:1–9 ]

[1] In the end2 of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene3 and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. [2] And, behold, there4 was5 a great earthquake: for6 the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. [3] His countenance7 was like lightning, and his raiment8 white as snow: [4] And for fear of him the9 keepers did shake10, and became as dead [men]. [5] And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear11 not ye: for I know that ye seek12 Jesus, which was crucified. [6] He is not here: for he is risen, as13 he said. Come14, see the place where the Lord lay. [7] And go15 quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth16 before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo17, I have told you. [8] And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with18 fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

[9] And as19 they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail20. And they came and held21 him by the feet, and worshipped22 him. [10] Then said Jesus unto them, Be23 not afraid: go24 tell my25 brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

The Report of the Guards

[11] Now when they were going, behold, some26 of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. [12] And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,27 [13] Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole28 him [away] while we slept. [14] And if this come to the governor’s ears, we29 will persuade him, and secure you. [15] So they took30 the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until31 this day.

The Great Commission[ Mark 16:14–18 ]

[16] Then the eleven32 disciples went33 away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. [17] And when34 they saw him, they worshipped35 him: but36 some doubted. [18] And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All37 power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

[19] [¶]Go ye therefore38, and teach all nations39, baptizing40 them in the name41 of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them42 to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am43 with you alway, [even] unto44 the end of the world. Amen45.

  1. Matt 28:1, Christ’s resurrection is declared by an angel to the women; Matt 28:9, He himself appears unto them; Matt 28:11, The chief priests give the soldiers money to say that he was stolen out of his sepulchre; Matt 28:16, Christ appears to his disciples, Matt 28:18. and sends them to baptize and teach all nations.

  2. The Hebrew word Schabbath from which our English word is derived, signifies rest, and is applied to all solemn festivals, equally with that one day of every week devoted to the worship of God; Ezek 20:21, "they polluted my sabbaths." Three evangelists say, the transaction recorded in this verse, occurred upon the first day of the week, early in the morning, about sunrising, and John says, while it was yet dark. Οψε G3796, σαββατων G4521, does not signify "in the evening of sabbath," but "sabbaths." Hence, the great feast having been concluded, the term "end of the sabbaths" denotes the time very clearly. Again, it may be observed that the Jews, speaking of their passover, sometimes speak according to their civil computation, wherein they measured their days from sun-rising to sun-rising. Sometimes according to their sacred computation, which was from sun-set to sun-set. This reconciles Num 28:18, which seems to make the fourteenth day of the first month, the first day of unleavened bread. Mark 16:1-2; Luke 23:56, Luke 24:1, Luke 24:22; John 20:1-10
