I Will Sing of His Love Forever

Maschil of Ethan2 the Ezrahite.

[1] I will3 sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with4 my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness5 to all generations6. [2] For I have said, Mercy7 shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness8 shalt thou establish in the very heavens. [3] I have made9 a covenant with my chosen10, I have sworn11 unto David my servant, [4] Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.12 [5] And the heavens13 shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation14 of the saints. [6] For who15 in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? [who] among the sons16 of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord? [7] God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all [them that are] about him.17 [8] O Lord18 God of hosts, who [is] a strong19 Lord like20 unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? [9] Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.21 [10] Thou hast22 broken Rahab23 in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered24 thine enemies with thy strong arm25. [11] The heavens [are] thine, the earth also [is] thine: [as for] the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.26 [12] The north27 and the south thou hast created them: Tabor28 and Hermon29 shall rejoice30 in thy name. [13] Thou hast a mighty arm31: strong is thy hand, [and] high is thy right hand. [14] Justice32 and judgment [are] the habitation33 of thy throne: mercy34 and truth shall go before thy face. [15] Blessed [is] the people that know35 the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light36 of thy countenance. [16] In thy name37 shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness38 shall they be exalted. [17] For thou39 [art] the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn40 shall be exalted. [18] For the Lord [is41] our defence; and the Holy42 One of Israel [is] our king43. [19] Then44 thou spakest in vision to thy holy45 one, and saidst, I have laid46 help upon [one that is] mighty; I have exalted47 [one] chosen out of the people. [20] I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:48 [21] With49 whom my hand shall be established: mine50 arm also shall strengthen him. [22] The enemy51 shall not exact upon him; nor the son52 of wickedness afflict him. [23] And I will53 beat down his foes before his face, and plague54 them that hate him. [24] But my55 faithfulness and my mercy [shall be] with him: and in my56 name shall his horn be exalted. [25] I will57 set his hand58 also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. [26] He shall cry unto me, Thou59 [art] my father, my God60, and the rock61 of my salvation. [27] Also62 I will make him [my] firstborn, higher63 than the kings of the earth. [28] My mercy64 will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant65 shall stand fast with him. [29] His seed66 also will I make [to endure] for ever, and his throne67 as the days68 of heaven. [30] If69 his children forsake70 my law, and walk71 not in my judgments; [31] If they break72 my statutes, and keep not my commandments; [32] Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.73 [33] Nevertheless74 my lovingkindness will I not utterly take75 from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail76. [34] My covenant77 will I not break, nor78 alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. [35] Once79 have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie80 unto David. [36] His seed81 shall endure for ever, and82 his throne as the sun before me. [37] It shall83 be established for ever84 as the moon, and [as85] a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. [38] But86 thou hast cast off and87 abhorred, thou hast been wroth88 with thine anointed. [39] Thou hast made void89 the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned90 his crown [by casting it] to the ground. [40] Thou hast broken91 down all his hedges; thou hast brought92 his strong holds to ruin. [41] All93 that pass by the way spoil him: he is94 a reproach to his neighbours. [42] Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.95 [43] Thou hast also turned96 the edge of his sword, and hast not made97 him to stand in the battle. [44] Thou98 hast made his glory99 to cease, and cast100 his throne down to the ground. [45] The101 days of his youth hast thou102 shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah. [46] How103 long, Lord? wilt104 thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath105 burn like fire? [47] Remember106 how short my time is: wherefore107 hast thou made all men in vain? [48] What108 man [is he that] liveth, and shall not see death109? shall110 he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah. [49] Lord, where111 [are] thy former lovingkindnesses, [which] thou112 swarest unto David in thy truth? [50] Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; [how] I do bear in my bosom [the reproach of] all the mighty people;113 [51] Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have114 reproached the footsteps115 of thine anointed. [52] Blessed116 [be] the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.

<< Psalm 88 Psalm 90 >>

  1. Ps 89:1, The psalmist praises God for his covenant; Ps 89:5, for his wonderful power; Ps 89:15, for the care of his church; Ps 89:19, for his favour to the kingdom of David; Ps 89:38, Then complaining of contrary events, Ps 89:46, he expostulates, prays, and blesses God. A Psalm for Ethan, the Ezrahite, to give instructions. This Psalm is generally supposed to have been written during the Babylonian captivity, when, the family of David being dethroned, and the royal family ruined, the Divine promises had apparently failed.

The moon is probably termed a faithful witness, because by her, particularly, time is measured. Her decrease and increase are especially observed by every nation; and by these time is generally estimated, especially among eastern nations. - So many moons is a man old - so many moons since such an event happened; and even their years are reckoned by lunations. Or, the rainbow may be intended; that faithful sign which God has established in the clouds, that the earth shall no more be destroyed by water.
