Deliver Me from My Enemies[ 1 Samuel 19:1–24 ]

To the chief Musician, Al–taschith, Michtam2 of David; when3 Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.

[1] Deliver4 me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me5 from them that rise up against me. [2] Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save6 me from bloody men. [3] For, lo, they7 lie in wait for my soul: the mighty8 are gathered against me; not9 [for] my transgression, nor [for] my sin, O Lord. [4] They run10 and prepare themselves without [my] fault: awake11 to help me12, and behold. [5] Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God13 of Israel, awake to visit14 all the heathen15: be not16 merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah. [6] They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.17 [7] Behold, they belch18 out with their mouth: swords19 [are] in their lips: for who20, [say they], doth hear? [8] But thou21, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen22 in derision. [9] [Because of] his strength23 will I wait upon thee: for God24 [is] my defence25. [10] The God26 of my mercy shall prevent27 me: God shall let28 me see [my desire] upon mine enemies29. [11] Slay30 them not, lest my people forget: scatter31 them by thy power; and bring32 them down, O Lord our shield33. [12] [For] the34 sin of their mouth [and] the words of their lips let them even be taken35 in their pride: and for cursing36 and lying [which] they speak. [13] Consume37 [them] in wrath, consume [them], that they [may] not [be]: and let38 them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah. [14] And at evening39 let them return; [and] let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. [15] Let them wander40 up and down for meat41, and grudge42 if43 they be not satisfied. [16] But44 I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud45 of thy mercy in the morning46: for thou47 hast been my defence and refuge in the day48 of my trouble. [17] Unto thee, O my49 strength, will I sing: for50 God [is] my defence, [and] the God of my mercy.

  2. The seven poems of the celebrated Arabian poets who flourished before the time of Mohammed, called Moallakat, from being suspended on the walls of the temple of Mecca, were also called Modhabat, "golden," because they were written in letters of gold on the papyrus; and probably this is another reason why the six poems of David were called golden.
