Simeon’s Inheritance

[1] And the second lot2 came forth to Simeon, [even] for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the3 inheritance of the children of Judah. [2] And they had in their inheritance Beer–sheba4, Sheba, and Moladah5, [3] And Hazar–shual6, and Balah, and Azem, [4] And Eltolad7, and Bethul, and Hormah8, [5] And Ziklag9, and Beth–marcaboth, and Hazar–susah10, [6] And Beth–lebaoth11, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages: [7] Ain12, Remmon13, and Ether14, and Ashan; four cities and their villages: [8] And all the villages that [were] round about these cities to Baalath–beer15, Ramath16 of the south. This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. [9] Out of the portion of the children of Judah [was] the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much17 for them: therefore18 the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them.

Zebulun’s Inheritance

[10] And the third19 lot came up for the children of Zebulun20 according to their families: and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid: [11] And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river21 that [is] before Jokneam22; [12] And turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of Chisloth–tabor23, and then goeth out to Daberath24, and goeth up to Japhia25, [13] And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah–hepher26, to Ittah–kazin, and goeth out to Remmon–methoar to Neah; [14] And the border compasseth it on the north side to Hannathon: and the outgoings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah–el: [15] And Kattath27, and Nahallal, and Shimron28, and Idalah, and Beth–lehem29: twelve cities with their villages. [16] This [is] the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Issachar’s Inheritance

[17] [And] the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families. [18] And their border was toward Jezreel30, and Chesulloth31, and Shunem32, [19] And Hapharaim33, and Shion34, and Anaharath, [20] And Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez, [21] And Remeth, and En–gannim35, and En–haddah, and Beth–pazzez; [22] And the coast reacheth to Tabor36, and Shahazimah, and Beth–shemesh37; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. [23] This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Asher’s Inheritance

[24] And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.3839 [25] And their border was Helkath40, and Hali, and Beten41, and Achshaph42, [26] And Alammelech, and Amad, and Misheal43; and reacheth to Carmel44 westward, and to Shihor–libnath; [27] And turneth toward the sunrising to Beth–dagon45, and reacheth to Zebulun46, and to the valley47 of Jiphthah–el toward the north side of Beth–emek, and Neiel, and goeth out to Cabul48 on the left hand, [28] And Hebron, and Rehob49, and Hammon, and Kanah50, [even] unto great51 Zidon; [29] And [then] the coast turneth to Ramah52, and to the strong city Tyre53; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib54: [30] Ummah also, and Aphek55, and Rehob56: twenty and two cities with their villages. [31] This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.57

Naphtali’s Inheritance

[32] The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, [even] for the children of Naphtali according to their families. [33] And their coast was from Heleph, from Allon to Zaanannim58, and Adami, Nekeb, and Jabneel, unto Lakum; and the outgoings thereof were at Jordan: [34] And [then] the coast turneth59 westward to Aznoth–tabor60, and goeth out from thence to Hukkok, and reacheth to Zebulun on the south side, and reacheth to Asher on the west side, and to Judah61 upon Jordan toward the sunrising. [35] And the fenced cities [are] Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath62, Rakkath, and Chinnereth63, [36] And Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor64, [37] And Kedesh65, and Edrei, and En–hazor, [38] And Iron, and Migdal–el, Horem, and Beth–anath66, and Beth–shemesh67; nineteen cities with their villages. [39] This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Dan’s Inheritance

[40] [And] the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families. [41] And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah68, and Eshtaol, and Ir–shemesh69, [42] And Shaalabbin70, and Ajalon71, and Jethlah, [43] And Elon, and Thimnathah72, and Ekron73, [44] And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon74, and Baalath75, [45] And Jehud, and Bene–berak, and Gath–rimmon76, [46] And Me–jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before77 Japho78. [47] And the coast79 of the children of Dan went out [too little] for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem80, Dan, after the name of Dan their father. [48] This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Joshua’s Inheritance

[49] When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave81 an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them: [50] According to the word of the Lord they gave him the city which he asked, [even] Timnath–serah82 in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein. [51] These [are83] the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh84 before the Lord, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.

  24. Josephus, who calls this town Dabaritta, or Darabitta, places it in the plain of Jezreel, or Esdraelon, on the confines of Samaria and Galilee. It is probably the Dabira which Jerome place towards amount Tabor, in the district of Diocesarea; and the Debora or Daboura, mentioned by travellers as a village at the foot of mount Tabor. Josh 21:28, Dabareh, 1Chr 6:72

  25. Probably Japha, a city of Galilee, near Jotapata, mentioned by Josephus.

  26. Placed by Jerome two miles from Sephoris, or Diocesarea, towards Tiberias. 2Kgs 14:25, Gath–hepher, methoar, or, which is drawn

  38. The lot Asher lay upon the coast of the great sea. We read of only one remarkable person of this tribe, and that was Anna, the prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, a widow of about four-score and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

  39. Luke 2:26-38

  40. 2Sam 2:16

  41. Probably the same as Bebeten or Batnai, mentioned by Eusebius, eight miles east from Ptolemais; and perhaps the Ecbatana which Pliny places not far from Ptolemais.

  42. Josh 11:1, Josh 12:20

  43. Situated, according to Eusebius, near mount Carmel, on the sea coast. Josh 21:30; 1Chr 6:74, Marshal

  45. 1Sam 5:2

  46. Situated on the sea coast, near Ptolemais.

  47. Josh 19:14

  48. Supposed to be the same town which Josephus calls Χωβουλο, and which he says was situated near the sea side, near Ptolemais. 1Kgs 9:13

  49. Josh 19:30

  50. This seems a different Cana from that in Lower Galilee; and to be that which is placed in some maps east of Tyre, between Libanus and Antilibanus, and south of the river Cassimer, or Leitani. John 2:1, John 2:11, John 4:46, Cana

  51. Josh 11:8; Judg 1:31; Isa 23:2, Isa 23:4, Isa 23:12

  52. Probably the Rama mentioned by Theodoret as a city of Syria; and placed in some maps between Sarepta and Sidon, eastward, near Lebanon.

  60. Apparently the same as Azanoth, which Eusebius places in the plain not far from Diocesarea or Sephoris. Josh 19:12, Josh 19:22

  61. As it is certain that the tribe of Naphtali did not border upon that of Judah, there being several tribes between, we should probably omit Judah, with the Septuagint; though it may have been a town so called.

  64. Josh 11:1, Josh 11:20, Josh 12:19

  65. Josh 12:22, Josh 20:7

  66. Eusebius mentions a town of the name of Βαταναιαν, fifteen miles from Cesarea. (Diocesarea or Sephoris probably.)

  67. Josh 19:22

  68. Situated on the frontiers of Dan and Judah, tens miles north from Eleutheropolis, towards Nicoplis, according to Eusebius, not far from Caphar Sorek. Josh 15:33, Zoreah, Judg 13:2, Judg 13:25, Judg 16:31, Judg 18:2; 1Chr 2:53; 2Chr 11:10

  69. Supposed by some to be the same as Beth–shemesh in the tribe of Judah; but this latter city is evidently distinguished from it by being assigned by the tribe of Judah to the Levites (Josh 21:16). Ir–shemesh rendered πολις Σαμμαυς by the LXX, seems to be the same as Emmaus or Nicopolis, 22 miles south-east from Lydda, according to the Old Jerusalem Itinerary.

  70. Eusebius calls it Σαλαβα, and places it in Samaria, and Jerome calls it Salebi (Ezek 48:1-35), and joins it to Ajalon and Emmaus. Judg 1:35, Shaalbim

  71. This appears to be the Ajalon which Jerome places two miles from Nicopolis or Emmaus, in the road to Jerusalem. Josh 10:12, Josh 21:24; 1Sam 14:31

  72. Gen 38:12; Judg 14:1-2, Timnath

  73. Ekron is placed by Eusebius between Ashdod and Jamnia, eastward; and probably the ruined village of Tookrair, mentioned by Dr. Richarson, situated on the top of a hill, and which he says seems to have been a place of considerable consequence, occupies its site.
