The Kings Defeated East of the Jordan

[1] Now these [are] the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other2 side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the3 river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east: [2] Sihon4 king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, [and] ruled from Aroer, which [is] upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok5, [which is] the border of the children of Ammon; [3] And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth6 on the east, and unto the sea7 of the plain, [even] the salt sea on the east, the way to Beth–jeshimoth8; and from the south9, under Ashdoth–pisgah10:

[4] [¶]And the coast11 of Og king of Bashan, [which was] of the remnant12 of the giants, that dwelt13 at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, [5] And reigned in mount Hermon14, and in Salcah15, and in all Bashan, unto the16 border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. [6] Them did Moses17 the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the Lord gave it18 [for] a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

The Kings Defeated West of the Jordan

[7] And these [are] the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side19 Jordan on the west, from Baal–gad20 in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir21; which Joshua gave22 unto the tribes of Israel [for] a possession according to their divisions; [8] In the mountains23, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country; the Hittites24, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

  6. This inland sea, or rather lake, which drives its several names, the Lake of Tiberias, Sea of Galilee, Lake of Gennesareth, from the territory which forms its western and south-western border, is computed to be between seventeen and eighteen miles in length, and from five to six in breadth. The waters of this lake, which are sweet and agreeable, lie in a deep basin, surrounded with lofty hills, except at the north and south, where it is a plain country or level. There is a current through the whole lake even to the shore; and the Jordan through it is discernible by the smoothness of the surface in that part. Its appearance from the north- western extremity is said by Mr. Buckingham to be exceedingly grand; but the barren aspect of the mountains on each side, and the total absence of wood, give a cast of dullness to the picture.
