Shishak Raids Jerusalem[ 1 Kings 14:25–28 ]

[1] And it came to pass, when Rehoboam2 had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook3 the law of the Lord, and all Israel4 with him.5 [2] And it came to pass, [that] in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak6 king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because7 they had transgressed against the Lord,8 [3] With twelve hundred9 chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people [were] without number10 that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims11, the Sukkiims12, and the Ethiopians13. [4] And he took the fenced14 cities which [pertained] to Judah, and came15 to Jerusalem.

[5] [¶]Then came Shemaiah16 the prophet to Rehoboam, and [to] the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the Lord, Ye have forsaken me17, and therefore have I also left you18 in the hand of Shishak. [6] Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled19 themselves; and they said, The Lord20 [is] righteous. [7] And when the Lord21 saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; [therefore22] I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some23 deliverance; and my wrath24 shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. [8] Nevertheless25 they shall be his servants; that they may26 know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries. [9] So Shishak27 king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away28 the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields29 of gold which Solomon had made. [10] Instead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass30, and committed [them] to the hands of the chief31 of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house. [11] And when the king entered into the house of the Lord, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber. [12] And when32 he humbled himself, the wrath of the Lord turned from him, that he would not destroy [him] altogether: and also in Judah things went well33.

Rehoboam’s Reign and Death[ 1 Kings 14:21–24 ]

[13] So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam34 [was] one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city35 which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put36 his name there. And his mother’s name [was] Naamah an Ammonitess37.38 [14] And he did evil, because he prepared39 not his heart to seek40 the Lord. [15] Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last41, [are] they not written in the book42 of Shemaiah43 the prophet, and of Iddo44 the seer concerning genealogies? And [there were] wars45 between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. [16] And Rehoboam slept46 with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah47 his son reigned in his stead.

Lubim, apparently the same with Lehabim (Gen 10:13), were probably the ancient inhabitants of Lybia (called Lubi in the Syriac version, Acts 2:10), a district of Africa, adjoining to Egypt, and extending along the shore of the Mediterranean as far as the city of Cyrene. 2Chr 16:8; Ezek 30:5; Nah 3:9

  12. The Sukkiim (from sachach, "to cover") are supposed to have been the Troglodites, as the LXX and Vulgate render, a people of Egypt, on the west of the Red Sea, so called because they dwelt εν τρωγλαις, in caves.

  13. These Cushim were probably the inhabitants of Ethiopia, south of Egypt. 2Chr 14:12, 2Chr 16:8; Isa 43:3; Dan 11:43; Nah 3:9, Cushim, Heb. Gen 10:6-8
