(KJV) Isaiah 501

⥃Israel’s Sin
[1] Thus saith the Lord, Where [is] the bill2 of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? or which3 of my creditors [is it] to whom I have sold you? Behold4, for your iniquities5 have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away. [2] Wherefore, when I came6, [was there] no man? when I called, [was there] none to answer? Is my7 hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I8 no power to deliver? behold, at my9 rebuke I dry10 up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish11 stinketh, because [there is] no water, and dieth for thirst. [3] I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.12
⥃The Servant’s Obedience [ Matthew 27:27–31 † Mark 15:16–20 † Luke 22:63–65 † John 19:1–15 ]
[4] The Lord God13 hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word14 in season to [him that is] weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the15 learned.
[5] [¶]The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.16 [6] I gave17 my back to the smiters, and my cheeks18 to them that plucked19 off the hair: I hid20 not my face from shame and spitting.
[7] [¶]For the Lord21 God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set22 my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. [8] [He is] near that23 justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us24 stand together: who [is] mine adversary25? let him come near to me. [9] Behold, the Lord God will help me; who [is] he [that] shall condemn me? lo, they all26 shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.
[10] Who [is] among27 you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth28 the voice of his servant, that walketh29 [in] darkness, and hath no light? let30 him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. [11] Behold, all ye31 that kindle a fire, that compass [yourselves] about with sparks: walk32 in the light of your fire, and in the sparks [that] ye have kindled. This shall33 ye have of mine hand; ye shall34 lie down in sorrow.

Husbands often sent bills of divorcement to their wives on slight occasions; and fathers, oppressed with debt, sold their children till the year of release. But this, saith God, cannot be my case: I am not governed by any such motives, nor am I urged by any such necessity. Your captivity and afflictions are the fruits of your own folly and wickedness. ↩

The eastern people always held the beard in great veneration; and to pluck a man's beard is one of the grossest indignities that can be offered. D'Arvieux gives a remarkable instance of an Arab, who, having received a wound in his jaw, chose to hazard his life rather than suffer the surgeon to cut off his beard. See note on 2Sam 10:4. ↩

Another instance of the utmost contempt and detestation. Throughout the East it is highly offensive to spit in any one's presence; and if this is such an indignity, how much more spitting in the face? ↩
