Isaiah’s Commission[ Matthew 13:10–17 Mark 4:10–12 Acts 28:16–31 ]

[1] In the year2 that king Uzziah died I saw also3 the Lord sitting4 upon a throne, high5 and lifted up, and his train6 filled7 the temple.8 [2] Above it stood9 the seraphims10: each one had six wings11; with twain he covered his face12, and with twain he covered his feet13, and with twain he did fly14. [3] And one cried unto another15, and said, Holy16, holy, holy, [is] the Lord of hosts: the whole earth17 [is] full of his glory. [4] And the posts18 of the door19 moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house20 was filled with smoke.

[5] Then said I21, Woe [is] me! for I am undone22; because I [am] a man23 of unclean lips, and I dwell24 in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes25 have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. [6] Then flew26 one of the seraphims unto me, having27 a live coal in his hand, [which28] he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: [7] And he laid [it] upon29 my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity30 is taken away, and thy sin purged. [8] Also I heard31 the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom32 shall I send, and who will go for us33? Then34 said I, Here [am] I35; send me.

[9] And he said, Go36, and tell this people, Hear ye37 indeed3839, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. [10] Make the heart40 of this people fat41, and make their ears heavy42, and shut their eyes; lest43 they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert44, and be healed. [11] Then said I, Lord45, how long? And he answered, Until the46 cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate47, [12] And the Lord48 have removed men far away, and [there be] a great49 forsaking in the midst of the land.

[13] [¶]But yet50 in it [shall be] a tenth, and [it] shall return51, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree52, and as an oak, whose substance53 [is] in them, when they cast [their leaves]: [so] the holy54 seed [shall be] the substance thereof.

  52. The teil-tree is the linden or lime-tree, a species very common in Palestine; the leaf of which resembles that of the laurel, and its flower that of the olive. But the original ailah which our translators render the oak (but here distinguished from allon the oak), and Bp. Lowth the ilex in Isa 1:29-30, probably denotes, as Celsius contends, the terebintḣ It is an evergreen of moderate size, but having the top and branches large in proportion to the trunk; leaves, like those of the olive, but green intermixed with red and purple; flowers, like those of the vine, growing in bunches, and purple; fruit, of a ruddy purple, the size of a juniper berry, hanging in clusters, very juicy, and containing a single seed of the size of a grape stone; wood, hard and fibrous, from which a resin distils; with an excresence scattered among the leaves, of the size of a chestnut, of a purple colour, variegated with green and white.
