Accept One Another

[1] We then that are strong2 ought3 to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please4 ourselves. [2] Let every one of us please [his] neighbour for [his] good to edification.5 [3] For even Christ6 pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The7 reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. [4] For whatsoever8 things were written aforetime were written for our learning9, that10 we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. [5] Now the God11 of patience and consolation12 grant13 you to be likeminded one toward another according to14 Christ Jesus: [6] That ye may with15 one mind [and] one mouth glorify God, even the16 Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ the Servant of Jews and Gentiles

[7] Wherefore receive17 ye one another, as18 Christ also received us to19 the glory of God. [8] Now I say20 that Jesus21 Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the22 truth23 of God, to confirm the promises [made] unto the fathers: [9] And that the Gentiles might glorify God for24 [his] mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. [10] And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.25 [11] And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.26 [12] And again, Esaias saith, There27 shall be a root of Jesse, and he28 that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him29 shall the Gentiles trust. [13] Now the God30 of hope fill31 you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound32 in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

[14] And I33 myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full34 of goodness, filled35 with all knowledge, able36 also to admonish one another. [15] Nevertheless, brethren, I have37 written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as38 putting you in mind, because39 of the grace that is given to me of God, [16] That I should40 be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering41 the gospel of God, that the offering up42 of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being43 sanctified by the Holy Ghost. [17] I have therefore whereof44 I may glory through Jesus Christ in45 those things which pertain to God. [18] For I will46 not dare to speak of any of those things which47 Christ hath not wrought by me, to make48 the Gentiles obedient, by word49 and deed, [19] Through mighty50 signs and wonders, by the51 power of the Spirit of God; so that52 from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum53, I have fully54 preached the gospel of Christ. [20] Yea, so55 have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build56 upon another man’s foundation: [21] But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand.57 [22] For which cause also I have58 been much59 hindered from coming to you.

Paul’s Travel Plans[ 1 Corinthians 16:5–9 ]

[23] But now having no more place in these parts, and60 having a great desire these many years to come unto you; [24] Whensoever I take61 my journey into Spain62, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to63 be brought on my way thitherward by you, if64 first I be somewhat filled65 with your [company66]. [25] But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints.67 [26] For it68 hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor69 saints which are at Jerusalem. [27] It hath pleased them verily; and70 their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things. [28] When therefore I have performed this, and71 have sealed to them this fruit, I will72 come by you into Spain. [29] And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.73 [30] Now I beseech you, brethren, for the74 Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for75 the love of the Spirit, that76 ye strive together with me in [your] prayers to God for me; [31] That I may77 be delivered from them that do not believe78 in Judea; and that79 my service which [I have] for Jerusalem may be accepted80 of the saints; [32] That I may81 come unto you with joy by the82 will of God, and may83 with you be refreshed. [33] Now the God84 of peace [be85] with you all. Amen.

  53. Illyricum, or Illyria, was a country of Europe, lying n and nw of Macedonia, on the eastern coast of the Adriatic gulf, opposite Italy. It was distinguished into two parts; Liburnia north, now Croatia; and Dalmatia south, still retaining the same name. The account of Paul's second visit to the peninsula of Greece, Acts 20:1-2, says Dr. Paley, leads us to suppose that, in going over Macedonia, he had passed so far to the west, as to come into those parts of the country which were contiguous to Illyricum, if he did not enter Illyricum itself. The history and the Epistle therefore so far agree; and the agreement is much strengthened by a coincidence of time; for much before the time when this epistle was written, he could not have said so, as his route, in his former journey, confined him to the eastern side of the peninsula, a considerable distance from Illyricum.
