Judah’s Rebellion[ 2 Chronicles 28:5–15 ]

[1] The vision3 of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw4 concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days5 of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, [and] Hezekiah, kings of Judah. [2] Hear6, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord7 hath spoken, I have8 nourished and brought up children, and they have9 rebelled against me. [3] The ox10 knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: [but] Israel11 doth not know, my people doth not consider. [4] Ah sinful12 nation, a people laden with iniquity13, a seed14 of evildoers, children15 that are corrupters: they have forsaken16 the Lord, they have provoked17 the Holy18 One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward19.

[5] [¶]Why should20 ye be stricken any more? ye will21 revolt more and more22: the whole23 head is sick, and the whole heart faint. [6] From the sole24 of the foot even unto the head [there is] no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises25, and putrifying sores: they have26 not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment27. [7] Your country28 [is] desolate, your cities [are] burned29 with fire: your land, strangers30 devour it in your presence, and [it is] desolate, as overthrown by strangers31. [8] And the daughter32 of Zion is left as a cottage33 in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged34 city. [9] Except the Lord of hosts had left35 unto us a very36 small remnant, we should37 have been as Sodom, [and] we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

Meaningless Offerings

[10] Hear38 the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom39; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. [11] To what purpose40 [is] the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats41. [12] When42 ye come to appear43 before me, who hath required44 this at your hand, to tread my courts? [13] Bring no more vain45 oblations; incense46 is an abomination unto me; the new47 moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; [it is48] iniquity49, even the solemn meeting. [14] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul50 hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary51 to bear [them]. [15] And when52 ye spread forth your hands, I will53 hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers54, I will not hear: your hands55 are full of blood56.

[16] Wash57 you, make you clean; put away58 the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease59 to do evil; [17] Learn to do well; seek60 judgment, relieve61 the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. [18] Come now, and let us62 reason together, saith the Lord: though your63 sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. [19] If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:64 [20] But if ye refuse65 and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth66 of the Lord hath spoken [it].

The Corruption of Zion

[21] How is the faithful67 city become68 an harlot! it was full69 of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. [22] Thy silver70 is become dross, thy wine71 mixed with water: [23] Thy princes72 [are] rebellious, and companions73 of thieves: every74 one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge75 not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. [24] Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty76 One of Israel, Ah77, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:

[25] [¶]And I78 will turn my hand upon thee, and purely79 purge80 away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: [26] And I will81 restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt82 be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. [27] Zion shall be redeemed83 with judgment, and her converts84 with righteousness.

[28] [¶]And the destruction85 of the transgressors and of the sinners [shall be] together, and they that86 forsake the Lord shall be consumed. [29] For they shall be ashamed87 of the oaks88 which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens89 that ye have chosen. [30] For ye shall be90 as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden91 that hath no water. [31] And the strong92 shall be as tow93, and the maker of it94 as a spark, and they95 shall both burn together, and none shall quench [them].

<< Song of Solomon 8 Isaiah 2 >>

  1. Isaiah has, with singular propriety, been denominated the Evangelical Prophet, on account of the number and variety of his prophecies concerning the advent and character, the ministry and preaching, the sufferings and death, and the extensive and permanent kingdom of the Messiah. So explicit and determinate are his predictions, as well as so numerous, that he seems to speak rather of things past than of events yet future; and he may be rather called an evangelist than a prophet. Though later critics, especially those on the continent, have expended much labour and learning in order to rob the prophet of his title; yet no one, whose mind is unprejudiced, can be at a loss in applying select portions of these prophecies to the mission and character of Jesus Christ, and to the events in his history which they are cited to illustrate by the sacred writers of the New Testament. In fact, his prophecies concerning the Messiah seem almost to anticipate the Gospel history; so clearly do they predict his Divine character. (Compare Isa 7:14 with Matt 1:18-23, and Luke 1:27-35; see Isa 6:1-13; Isa 9:6; Isa 35:4; Isa 40:5, Isa 40:9, Isa 40:19; Isa 42:6-8; compare Isa 61:1, with Luke 4:18; see Isa 62:11; Isa 63:1-4); his miracles (Isa 35:5, Isa 35:6); his peculiar character and virtues (Isa 11:2, Isa 11:3; Isa 40:11; Isa 43:1-3); his rejection (Compare Isa 6:9-12 with Mark 13:14; see Isa 7:14, Isa 7:15; Isa 53:3); his sufferings for our sins (Isa 50:6; Isa 53:4-11); his death and burial (Isa 53:8, Isa 53:9); his victory over death (Isa 25:8; Isa 53:10, Isa 53:12); his final glory (Isa 49:7, Isa 49:22, 33; Isa 52:13-15; Isa 53:4, Isa 53:5); and the establishment, increase, and perfection of his kingdom (Isa 2:2-4; Isa 9:2, Isa 9:7; Isa 11:4-10; Isa 16:5; Isa 29:18-24; Isa 32:1; Isa 40:4, Isa 40:5; Isa 42:4; Isa 46:13; Isa 49:9-13; Isa 51:3-6; Isa 53:6-10; Isa 55:1-3; Isa 59:16-21; 60; Isa 61:1-5; Isa 65:25); each specifically pointed out, and pourtrayed with the most striking and discriminating characters. It is impossible, indeed, to reflect on these, and on the whole chain of his illustrious prophecies, and not be sensible that they furnish the most incontestable evidence in support of Christianity. The style of Isaiah has been universally admired as the most perfect model of elegance and sublimity; and as distinguished for all the magnificence, and for all the sweetness of the Hebrew language.

Isa 1:1, Isaiah complains of Judah for her rebellion; Isa 1:5, He laments her judgments; Isa 1:10, He upbraids their whole service; Isa 1:16, He exhorts to repentance, with promises and threatenings; Isa 1:21, Bewailing their wickedness, he denounces God’s judgments; Isa 1:25, He promises grace; Isa 1:28, and threatens destruction to the wicked.
