⥃Do Not Rebuke Me in Your Anger 2  [ Psalms 6:1–10 ]

A Psalm of David, to bring3 to remembrance.

[1] O Lord, rebuke4 me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot5 displeasure. [2] For thine6 arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand7 presseth me sore. [3] [There is] no soundness8 in my flesh because of thine anger; neither9 [is there any] rest10 in my bones because11 of my sin. [4] For mine12 iniquities are gone over mine head: as an13 heavy burden they are too heavy for me. [5] My wounds14 stink [and] are corrupt because of my foolishness. [6] I am troubled15; I am bowed16 down greatly; I go mourning17 all the day long. [7] For my loins18 are filled with a loathsome [disease]: and [there is] no19 soundness in my flesh. [8] I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared20 by reason of the disquietness of my heart. [9] Lord21, all my desire [is] before thee; and my groaning22 is not hid from thee. [10] My heart23 panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light24 of mine eyes, it also is gone from25 me. [11] My lovers26 and my friends stand27 aloof from my sore28; and my kinsmen29 stand afar off30. [12] They also that seek after my life lay snares31 [for me]: and they that seek my hurt speak32 mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. [13] But I, as a deaf [man], heard not; and [I was] as a dumb man [that] openeth not his mouth.33 [14] Thus I was as a man that heareth34 not, and in whose mouth [are] no reproofs. [15] For in thee35, O Lord, do36 I hope: thou wilt hear37, O Lord38 my God. [16] For I said39, [Hear me], lest [otherwise] they should rejoice over me: when my foot40 slippeth, they magnify41 [themselves] against me. [17] For I [am] ready to halt42, and my sorrow43 [is] continually before me. [18] For44 I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry45 for my sin. [19] But46 mine enemies [are] lively47, [and] they are strong: and they that48 hate me wrongfully are multiplied. [20] They also that render49 evil for good are mine adversaries; because50 I follow [the thing that] good [is]. [21] Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God51, be not far from me. [22] Make52 haste to help me53, O Lord54 my salvation.

On reading these and similar passages, say Bp. Lowth, some, who were but little acquainted with the genius of Hebrew poetry, have pretended to enquire into the nature of the disease with which the poet was afflicted; not less absurdly, in my opinion, than if they had perplexed themselves to discover in what river he was plunged, when he complains that "the deep waters had gone over his soul."
