⥃Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread [ Exodus 12:14–28 † Leviticus 23:4–8 † Numbers 28:16–25 ]

[1] Observe the month2 of Abib, and keep the passover3 unto the Lord thy God: for in4 the month of Abib the Lord thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. [2] Thou shalt therefore sacrifice5 the passover unto the Lord thy God, of the flock and the herd, in the place which6 the Lord shall choose to place his name there. [3] Thou shalt eat no7 leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith, [even] the bread8 of affliction; for thou camest9 forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest10 remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of thy life. [4] And there shall11 be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither12 shall there [any thing] of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning. [5] Thou mayest not sacrifice13 the passover within any of thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee: [6] But at the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even14, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt. [7] And thou shalt roast15 and eat [it] in the place16 which the Lord thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the morning, and go unto thy tents. [8] Six days17 thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day [shall be] a solemn assembly18 to the Lord thy God: thou shalt do no work [therein].

⥃The Feast of Weeks [ Numbers 28:26–31 ]

[9] [¶]Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from [such time as] thou beginnest [to put] the sickle to the corn.19 [10] And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the Lord thy God with a tribute20 of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give [unto the Lord thy God], according21 as the Lord thy God hath blessed thee: [11] And thou shalt rejoice before the Lord thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that [is] within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that [are] among you, in the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen to place his name there.22 [12] And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt: and thou shalt observe and do these statutes.23

⥃The Feast of Tabernacles [ Numbers 29:12–40 ]

[13] [¶]Thou shalt observe the feast24 of tabernacles seven days, after that thou hast gathered in thy corn and thy wine25: [14] And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that [are] within thy gates.26 [15] Seven days27 shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the Lord thy God in the place which the Lord shall choose: because28 the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely rejoice.

[16] [¶]Three times29 in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall30 not appear before the Lord empty: [17] Every man [shall give] as he is able31, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.

⥃Judges and Justice

[18] Judges32 and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates33, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment. [19] Thou shalt not wrest34 judgment; thou shalt not respect35 persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words36 of the righteous. [20] That which37 is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live38, and inherit the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

⥃Forbidden Forms of Worship

[21] [¶]Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the Lord thy God, which thou shalt make thee.39 [22] Neither shalt thou set thee up [any] image40; which41 the Lord thy God hateth.

  3. This word comes from the Hebrew verb pasach, to pass, to leap or skip over. The destroying angel passed over the houses marked with the blood of the Paschal Lamb, so the wrath of God passes over those whose souls sprinkled with the blood of Christ. 1Cor 5:7. As the paschal lamb was killed before Israel was delivered, so by the death of Christ, we have redemption through his blood. It was killed before the tables of the law were delivered to Moses, or Aaron's sacrifices were enjoined; thus deliverance comes to men, not by the works of the law, but by the only true passover, the Lamb of God. Rom 3:25. Heb 9:14. It was killed the first month of the year, which prefigured that Christ should suffer death in that month. John 18:28. it was killed in the evening. Exod 12:6. Christ suffered at that time of the day. Matt 27:46. Heb 1:2. At even the sun sets; at Christ's passion, universal darkness was upon the whole earth. The passover was roasted with fire, denoting the sharp and dreadful pains that Christ should suffer, not only from men, but God also. It was to be eaten with bitter herbs, Exod 12:8; not only to put them in remembrance of their bitter bondage in Egypt, but also to testify our mortification to sin, and readiness to undergo afflictions for Christ, Col 1:24; and likewise to teach us the absolute necessity of true repentance in all that would profitably feed by faith on Christ, the true paschal lamb. ↩

This expression may refer to the gate of the city, as the forum or place of public concourse among the Israelites, where a court of judicature was held, to try all causes and decide all affairs. The same practice obtained among other Eastern nations. The Ottoman court, it is well known, derived its appellation of the Porte, from the distribution of justice and the dispatch of public business at its gates. And the square tower which forms the principal entrance to the Alhamra, or red palace of the Moorish kings of Grenada, retains to this day the appellation of the Gate of judgment, from its having been the place where justice was at one period summarily administered. ↩
