⥃I Will Give Thanks to the LORD
To the chief Musician upon Muth–labben, A Psalm of David.
[1] I will praise2 [thee], O Lord, with my3 whole heart; I will shew4 forth all thy marvellous works. [2] I will be5 glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou6 most High. [3] When mine enemies are turned back, they shall7 fall and perish at thy presence. [4] For8 thou hast maintained9 my right10 and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right. [5] Thou hast rebuked11 the heathen, thou hast destroyed12 the wicked, thou hast put out13 their name for ever and ever. [6] O thou14 enemy, destructions15 are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast16 destroyed cities; their memorial17 is perished with them. [7] But18 the Lord shall endure for ever: he hath19 prepared his throne for judgment. [8] And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.20 [9] The Lord21 also will be a refuge22 for the oppressed, a refuge in times23 of trouble. [10] And they that know24 thy name will put25 their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast26 not forsaken them that seek thee. [11] Sing27 praises to the Lord, which28 dwelleth in Zion: declare29 among the people his doings. [12] When30 he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth31 not the cry of the humble32. [13] Have33 mercy upon me, O Lord; consider34 my trouble [which I suffer] of them that hate me, thou35 that liftest me up from the gates of death: [14] That36 I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates37 of the daughter38 of Zion: I will39 rejoice in thy salvation. [15] The heathen are sunk down in the pit [that] they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.40 [16] The Lord is known41 [by] the judgment [which] he executeth: the wicked42 is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion43. Selah. [17] The wicked44 shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget45 God. [18] For the46 needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation47 of the poor shall [not] perish for ever. [19] Arise48, O Lord; let not49 man prevail: let the50 heathen be judged in thy sight. [20] Put51 them in fear, O Lord: [that] the nations may52 know themselves [to be but] men. Selah.

Ps 9:1, David praises God for executing judgment; Ps 9:11, He incites others to praise him; Ps 9:13, He prays that he may have cause to praise him. Probably, “the death of the champion:” so the Chaldee has, “A Psalm of David, to be sung concerning the death of the man who went out between (mibbeyney ) the camps;” evidently considering labben , of the same import as bainayim , “a middle-man or champion,” as Goliath is termed, 1Sam 17:4, concerning whose defeat this psalm is generally supposed to have been composed. ↩
