⥃Christ’s Perfect Sacrifice ^{[ Psalms 40:1–17 ]}

[1] For the law having² a shadow of good things to come, [and] not the very image of the things, can never with³ those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect⁴. [2] For then would they not have⁵ ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once⁶ purged should have had no more conscience⁷ of sins. [3] But in those [sacrifices there is] a remembrance⁸ again [made] of sins every year. [4] For [it is] not⁹ possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take¹⁰ away sins. [5] Wherefore when¹¹ he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice¹² and offering thou wouldest not, but¹³ a body hast thou prepared me¹⁴: [6] In burnt¹⁵ offerings and [sacrifices] for sin thou¹⁶ hast had no pleasure. [7] Then said I, Lo¹⁷, I come (in¹⁸ the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. [8] Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and [offering] for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure [therein]; which are offered by the law; [9] Then said he, Lo¹⁹, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh²⁰ away the first, that he may establish the second. [10] By the which will we²¹ are sanctified through the offering²² of the body of Jesus Christ once [for all]. [11] And every priest standeth daily²³ ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which²⁴ can never take away sins: [12] But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;²⁵ [13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.²⁶ [14] For by one offering he²⁷ hath perfected for ever them²⁸ that are sanctified. [15] [Whereof] the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,²⁹ [16] This [is] the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;³⁰ [17] And³¹ their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. [18] Now where remission of these [is], [there is] no more offering for sin.³²

⥃A Call to Persevere ^{[ Jude 1:17–23 ]}

[19] Having³³ therefore, brethren, boldness³⁴ to enter³⁵ into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, [20] By a new³⁶ and living way, which he hath consecrated³⁷ for us, through³⁸ the veil, that is to say, his³⁹ flesh; [21] An⁴⁰d [having] an high priest over the house⁴¹ of God; [22] Let us draw⁴² near with a true⁴³ heart in full⁴⁴ assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled⁴⁵ from an evil⁴⁶ conscience, and our bodies⁴⁷ washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold⁴⁸ fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering⁴⁹; (for⁵⁰ he [is] faithful that promised;) [24] And let us consider⁵¹ one another to provoke⁵² unto love⁵³ and to good works: [25] Not forsaking⁵⁴ the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but⁵⁵ exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye⁵⁶ see the day approaching. [26] For if⁵⁷ we sin wilfully after⁵⁸ that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there⁵⁹ remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [27] But a certain⁶⁰ fearful looking for of judgment and fiery⁶¹ indignation, which⁶² shall devour the adversaries. [28] He that despised⁶³ Moses’ law died without⁶⁴ mercy under⁶⁵ two or three witnesses: [29] Of how⁶⁶ much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden⁶⁷ under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood⁶⁸ of the covenant, wherewith⁶⁹ he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath⁷⁰ done despite unto the Spirit⁷¹ of grace? [30] For we know him that hath said, Vengeance⁷² [belongeth] unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall⁷³ judge his people. [31] [It is] a fearful⁷⁴ thing to fall⁷⁵ into the hands of the living God. [32] But call⁷⁶ to remembrance the former days, in which, after⁷⁷ ye were illuminated, ye endured⁷⁸ a great fight of afflictions; [33] Partly, whilst ye were made⁷⁹ a gazingstock both by reproaches⁸⁰ and afflictions; and partly, whilst⁸¹ ye became companions of them that were so used. [34] For ye had compassion of me in my⁸² bonds, and took⁸³ joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have⁸⁴ in heaven a better and an enduring substance. [35] Cast⁸⁵ not away therefore your confidence, which hath great⁸⁶ recompence of reward. [36] For ye have⁸⁷ need of patience, that, after⁸⁸ ye have done the will of God, ye might⁸⁹ receive the promise. [37] For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.⁹⁰ [38] Now the just⁹¹ shall live by faith: but⁹² if [any man] draw back, my⁹³ soul shall have no pleasure in him. [39] But we are⁹⁴ not of them who draw back unto⁹⁵ perdition; but⁹⁶ of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
