(KJV) 1 Timothy 3¹

⥃Qualifications for Overseers ^{[ Titus 1:5–9 † 1 Peter 5:1–4 ]}

[1] This [is] a² true saying, If a man desire the office³ of a bishop⁴, he desireth⁵ a good work. [2] A bishop⁶ then must be blameless⁷, the husband⁸ of one wife, vigilant⁹, sober, of good behaviour¹⁰, given¹¹ to hospitality, apt¹² to teach; [3] No¹³t given to wine¹⁴, no striker, not greedy¹⁵ of filthy¹⁶ lucre; but patient¹⁷, not a brawler¹⁸, not covetous¹⁹; [4] One that ruleth²⁰ well his own house, having his children in subjection with²¹ all gravity; [5] (For if²² a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church²³ of God?) [6] Not a novice²⁴, lest²⁵ being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation²⁶ of the devil. [7] Moreover he must have a good²⁷ report of them²⁸ which are without; lest²⁹ he fall into reproach and the snare³⁰ of the devil.

⥃Qualifications for Deacons ^{[ Acts 6:1–7 ]}

[8] Likewise [must] the deacons³¹ [be³²] grave, not doubletongued³³, not given³⁴ to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; [9] Holding³⁵ the mystery³⁶ of the faith in a pure conscience. [10] And let these³⁷ also first be proved; then let them use³⁸ the office of a deacon, being³⁹ [found] blameless. [11] Even so [must their⁴⁰] wives [be⁴¹] grave, not⁴² slanderers, sober⁴³, faithful⁴⁴ in all things. [12] Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.⁴⁵ [13] For they⁴⁶ that have used⁴⁷ the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree⁴⁸, and great⁴⁹ boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

⥃The Mystery of Godliness

[14] These things write I unto thee, hoping⁵⁰ to come unto thee shortly: [15] But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know⁵¹ how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house⁵² of God, which is the church⁵³ of the living⁵⁴ God, the pillar⁵⁵ and ground⁵⁶ of the truth⁵⁷. [16] And without⁵⁸ controversy great is the mystery⁵⁹ of god⁶⁰liness: God was manifest⁶¹ in the flesh, justified⁶² in the Spirit, seen⁶³ of angels, preached⁶⁴ unto the Gentiles, believed⁶⁵ on in the world, received⁶⁶ up into glory.
