⥃Prologue ^{[ Luke 1:1–4 ]}

[1] The former³ treatise have I made, O Theophilus⁴, of⁵ all that Jesus began both to do and teach, [2] Until the day⁶ in which he was taken up, after that he through⁷ the Holy Ghost had given⁸ commandments unto the apostles⁹ whom he had chosen: [3] To whom also he shewed¹⁰ himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty¹¹ days, and speaking¹² of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: [4] And, being assembled together¹³ with [them], commanded¹⁴ them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise¹⁵ of the Father, which, [saith he], ye have heard of me. [5] For John¹⁶ truly baptized with water; but¹⁷ ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

⥃The Ascension ^{[ Mark 16:19–20 † Luke 24:50–53 ]}

[6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord¹⁸, wilt thou at this time restore¹⁹ again the kingdom to Israel? [7] And he said unto them, It²⁰ is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which²¹ the Father hath put in his own power. [8] But ye shall²² receive power²³, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye²⁴ shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria²⁵, and unto²⁶ the uttermost part of the earth. [9] And when²⁷ he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud²⁸ received him out of their sight. [10] And while²⁹ they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two³⁰ men stood by them in white apparel; [11] Which also said, Ye men³¹ of Galilee, why³² stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall³³ so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

⥃Matthias Replaces Judas

[12] Then returned they unto Jerusalem from³⁴ the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath³⁵ day’s journey. [13] An³⁶d when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter³⁷, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip³⁸, and Thomas³⁹, Bartholomew, and Matthew⁴⁰, James⁴¹ [the son] of Alpheus⁴², and Simon⁴³ Zelotes, and Judas⁴⁴ [the brother] of James. [14] These all⁴⁵ continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the⁴⁶ women, and Mary⁴⁷ the mother of Jesus, and with his⁴⁸ brethren.

[15] And in those days Peter⁴⁹ stood up in the midst of the disciples, an⁵⁰d said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) [16] Men⁵¹ [and] brethren, this⁵² scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the⁵³ Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake⁵⁴ before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. [17] For he⁵⁵ was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this⁵⁶ ministry. [18] Now this⁵⁷ man purchased a field with⁵⁸ the reward of iniquity; and falling⁵⁹ headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. [19] And it⁶⁰ was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama⁶¹, that is to say, The field of blood. [20] For it is written in⁶² the book of Psalms, Let his⁶³⁶⁴ habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishopric⁶⁵k let another take. [21] Wherefore of these⁶⁶ men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went⁶⁷ in and out among us, [22] Beginning⁶⁸ from the baptism of John, unto⁶⁹ that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness⁷⁰ with us of his resurrection. [23] And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas⁷¹, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. [24] And they⁷² prayed, and said, Thou, Lord⁷³, which knowest the hearts of all [men], shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, [25] That he may⁷⁴ take part of this ministry and apostleship, from⁷⁵ which Judas by⁷⁶ transgression fell, that he might go⁷⁷ to his own place. [26] And they⁷⁸ gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias⁷⁹; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
