(KJV) Acts 112

<< John 21 Acts 2 >>

Prologue[ Luke 1:1–4 ]

[1] The former3 treatise have I made, O Theophilus4, of5 all that Jesus began both to do and teach, [2] Until the day6 in which he was taken up, after that he through7 the Holy Ghost had given8 commandments unto the apostles9 whom he had chosen: [3] To whom also he shewed10 himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty11 days, and speaking12 of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: [4] And, being assembled together13 with [them], commanded14 them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise15 of the Father, which, [saith he], ye have heard of me. [5] For John16 truly baptized with water; but17 ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

The Ascension[ Mark 16:19–20 Luke 24:50–53 ]

[6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord18, wilt thou at this time restore19 again the kingdom to Israel? [7] And he said unto them, It20 is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which21 the Father hath put in his own power. [8] But ye shall22 receive power23, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye24 shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria25, and unto26 the uttermost part of the earth. [9] And when27 he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud28 received him out of their sight. [10] And while29 they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two30 men stood by them in white apparel; [11] Which also said, Ye men31 of Galilee, why32 stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall33 so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Matthias Replaces Judas

[12] Then returned they unto Jerusalem from34 the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath35 day’s journey. [13] An36d when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter37, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip38, and Thomas39, Bartholomew, and Matthew40, James41 [the son] of Alpheus42, and Simon43 Zelotes, and Judas44 [the brother] of James. [14] These all45 continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the46 women, and Mary47 the mother of Jesus, and with his48 brethren.

[15] And in those days Peter49 stood up in the midst of the disciples, an50d said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) [16] Men51 [and] brethren, this52 scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the53 Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake54 before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. [17] For he55 was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this56 ministry. [18] Now this57 man purchased a field with58 the reward of iniquity; and falling59 headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. [19] And it60 was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama61, that is to say, The field of blood. [20] For it is written in62 the book of Psalms, Let his6364 habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishopric65k let another take. [21] Wherefore of these66 men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went67 in and out among us, [22] Beginning68 from the baptism of John, unto69 that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness70 with us of his resurrection. [23] And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas71, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. [24] And they72 prayed, and said, Thou, Lord73, which knowest the hearts of all [men], shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, [25] That he may74 take part of this ministry and apostleship, from75 which Judas by76 transgression fell, that he might go77 to his own place. [26] And they78 gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias79; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

  1. The Acts of the Apostles is a most valuable portion of Divine revelation; and, independently of its universal reception in the Christian church, as an authentic and inspired production, it bears the most satisfactory internal evidence of its authenticity and truth. St. Luke’s long attendance upon St. Paul, and his having been an eyewitness of many of the facts which he has recorded, independently of his Divine inspiration, render him a most suitable and credible historian; and his medical knowledge, for he is allowed to have been a physician, enabled him both to form a proper judgment of the miraculous cures which were performed by St. Paul, and to give an authentic and circumstantial detail of them. The plainness and simplicity of the narrative are also strong circumstances in its favour. The history of the Acts is one of the most important parts of the Sacred History, for without it neither the Gospels nor Epistles could have been so clearly understood; but by the aid of it the whole scheme of the Christian revelation is set before us in a clear and easy view.

  2. Acts 1:1, Christ, preparing his apostles to the beholding of his ascension, gathers them together unto the mount Olivet, commands them to expect in Jerusalem the sending down of the Holy Ghost, promises after a few days to send it, and ascends into heaven in their sight; Acts 1:10, After his ascension they are warned by two angels to depart, and to set their minds upon his second coming; Acts 1:12, They accordingly return, and, giving themselves to prayer, choose Matthias apostle in the place of Judas.
