A Greeting from Jude[ James 1:1 ]

[1] Jude3, the servant4 of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them5 that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved6 in Jesus Christ, [and] called7:8 [2] Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.9

God’s Judgment on the Ungodly[ 2 Peter 3:1–7 ]

[3] Beloved, when10 I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common11 salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye12 should earnestly contend for the faith which13 was once delivered unto the saints14. [4] For there are certain men crept15 in unawares, who16 were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly17 men, turning18 the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying19 the only20 Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [5] I will therefore put21 you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having22 saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward23 destroyed them that believed not. [6] And the angels24 which kept not their first estate25, but left their own habitation, he hath26 reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto27 the judgment of the great day. [7] Even as28 Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange29 flesh, are30 set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal31 fire. [8] Likewise also these32 [filthy] dreamers defile33 the flesh, despise34 dominion, and speak35 evil of dignities. [9] Yet Michael36 the archangel37, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body38 of Moses, durst39 not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord40 rebuke thee. [10] But these speak41 evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those42 things they corrupt themselves. [11] Woe43 unto them! for44 they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran45 greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished46 in the gainsaying of Core. [12] These are spots47 in your feasts48 of charity, when they feast with you, feeding49 themselves without fear: clouds50 [they are] without water, carried51 about of winds; trees52 whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice53 dead, plucked54 up by the roots; [13] Raging55 waves of the sea, foaming56 out their own shame; wandering57 stars, to whom58 is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. [14] And Enoch59 also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold60, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, [15] To execute61 judgment upon all, and to convince62 all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all63 their hard [speeches] which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. [16] These are murmurers64, complainers, walking65 after their own lusts; and their mouth66 speaketh great swelling [words], having67 men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

A Call to Persevere[ Hebrews 10:19–39 2 Peter 3:1–7 ]

[17] But, beloved, remember68 ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; [18] How that they told you there69 should be mockers in the last time, who70 should walk after their own ungodly lusts. [19] These be they who71 separate themselves, sensual72, having73 not the Spirit. [20] But ye, beloved, building74 up yourselves on your most75 holy faith, praying76 in the Holy Ghost, [21] Keep77 yourselves in78 the love of God, looking79 for the mercy80 of our Lord Jesus Christ unto81 eternal life. [22] And of some have compassion, making a difference:82 [23] And others save83 with fear, pulling84 [them] out of the fire; hating85 even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Doxology[ Romans 16:25–27 ]

[24] Now unto him that is able86 to keep you from falling, and to present87 [you] faultless88 before the presence89 of his glory with exceeding90 joy, [25] To the only91 wise God92 our Saviour, [be] glory93 and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

<< 3 John 1 Revelation 1 >>

  1. St. Jude, says Origen, has written an Epistle in a few lines indeed, but full of vigorous expressions of heavenly grace - Ιουδας G2455, μεν G3303, εγραψεν επιστολην ολιγοστιχον μεν G3303, πεπληρωμενην δε G1161, ουρανιου χαριτος ερρωμενων λογων. He briefly and forcibly represents the detestable doctrines and practices of certain false teachers, generally supposed to be the impure Gnostics, Nicolaitans and followers of Simon Magus; and reproves these profligate perverters of sound principles, and patrons of lewdness, with a holy indignation and just severity; while at the same time he exhorts all sound Christians, with genuine apostolic charity, to have tender compassion on these deluded wretches, and to endeavour vigorously to reclaim them from the ways of hell, and pluck them as brands out of the fire. There is a great similarity in sentiment and style between this Epistle and the second chapter of the second Epistle of Peter. Both writers are nearly alike in vehemence and holy indignation against impudence and lewdness, and against those who insidiously undermine chastity, purity, and sound principles.

  2. Jude 1:1, He exhorts them to be constant in the profession of the faith; Jude 1:4, False teachers are crept in to seduce them, for whose evil doctrine and manners horrible punishment is prepared; Jude 1:20, whereas the godly, by the assistance of the Holy Spirit, and prayers to God, may persevere, and grow in grace, and keep themselves, and recover others out of the snares of those deceivers.
