(KJV) Acts 6¹

⥃The Choosing of the Seven ^{[ 1 Timothy 3:8–13 ]}

[1] And in those days, when² the number of the disciples was multiplied, there³ arose a murmuring of the Grecians⁴ against the Hebrews⁵, because their⁶ widows were neglected in the daily⁷ ministration. [2] Then the twelve⁸ called the multit⁹ude of the disciples [unto them], and said, It is not reason that we should¹⁰ leave the word of God, and serve tables. [3] Wherefore, brethren¹¹, look¹² ye out among you seven men of honest¹³ report, full¹⁴ of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom¹⁵ we may appoint over this business. [4] But we will give¹⁶ ourselves continually to prayer¹⁷, and to the ministry of the word.

[5] And the saying¹⁸ pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen¹⁹, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip²⁰, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas²¹ a proselyte²² of Antioch: [6] Whom they set before the apostles: and when²³ they had prayed, they laid [their] hands on them. [7] And the word²⁴ of God increased; and the number²⁵ of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests²⁶ were obedient²⁷ to the faith.

⥃The Arrest of Stephen

[8] And Stephen, full²⁸ of faith and power, did²⁹ great wonders and miracles among the people.

[9] Then there³⁰ arose certain of the synagogue³¹, which is called [the synagogue] of the Libertines, and Cyrenians³², and Alexandrians³³, and of them of Cilicia³⁴ and of Asia³⁵, disputing³⁶ with Stephen. [10] And they were not able³⁷ to resist the wisdom and the spirit³⁸ by which he spake. [11] Then they³⁹ suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous⁴⁰ words against Moses⁴¹, and [against] God. [12] And they stirred⁴² up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon [him], and caught⁴³ him, and brought [him] to the council, [13] And set⁴⁴ up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: [14] For we have⁴⁵ heard him say, that⁴⁶ this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change⁴⁷ the customs⁴⁸ which Moses delivered us. [15] And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw⁴⁹ his face as it had been the face of an angel.
