⥃Cast Your Bread upon the Waters
[1] Cast2 thy bread3 upon the waters4: for5 thou shalt find it after many days.678 [2] Give a portion9 to seven10, and also to eight; for11 thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. [3] If the clouds12 be full of rain, they empty [themselves] upon the earth: and if the tree13 fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. [4] He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.14 [5] As thou knowest not what15 [is] the way of the spirit, [nor16] how the bones [do grow] in the womb of her that is with child: even17 so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. [6] In the morning sow18 thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest19 not whether shall prosper20, either this or that, or whether they both [shall be] alike good.
⥃Enjoy Your Years
[7] Truly the light21 [is] sweet, and a pleasant22 [thing it is] for the eyes to behold the sun: [8] But if a man live many years, [and] rejoice23 in them all; yet24 let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that25 cometh [is] vanity.26
[9] [¶]Rejoice27, O young man, in thy youth28; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk29 in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight30 of thine eyes: but know31 thou, that for all these [things] God will bring thee into judgment. [10] Therefore remove32 sorrow33 from thy heart, and put34 away evil from thy flesh: for35 childhood and youth [are] vanity.

That is, says Bp. Lowth, "Sow thy seed or corn on the face of the waters;" in plain terms, sow without any hope of a harvest. Do good even to them on whom your benefactions seem thrown away. Dr. Jebb has well illustrated it by the following passages: ↩

Eccl 11:6; Deut 15:10; Ps 41:1-2, Ps 126:5-6; Prov 11:18, Prov 19:17; Matt 10:13, Matt 10:42, Matt 25:40; Luke 14:14; 2Cor 9:6; Gal 6:8-10; Heb 6:10 ↩

"Vain are the favours done to vicious men;
Not vainer 'tis to sow the foaming deep.
The deep no pleasant harvest shall afford,
Nor will the wicked ever make return. ↩ -
"To befriend the wicked is like sowing in the sea.
These, indeed, invert this precept;
Nor is it extraordinary that they should. ↩ -
"The one, frail human power alone produced,
The other, God." ↩ -
